Tar unpack skipping files inconsistently
Hello,
For some reason some tar files are almost entirely skipped except a few inner files while other tar files are unpacked correctly and entirely.
Those same tar files missed by the internal unpack engine are correctly unpacked by Winrar externally.
What can I do to solve that or force TC to use Winrar externally for tar files?

Re: Tar unpack skipping files inconsistently
How do you extract the archives, Alt+F9 when outside of the archive or F5 (or Drag'n'Drop) when inside the archive? What kind of .tar files are we talking about? Plain .tar files or nested ones inside .gz, .bz2 or .xz?

From outside the archive. Just select them and Alt+ F9. Plain .tar files.
They are really big. 40Gb+.

Re: Tar unpack skipping files inconsistently
At least if the menu would integrate Winrar submenus in TC it would be fine but they are not showing, while they do show when called for from within Windows Explorer.

The context menu entries for archives of an installed WinRAR are shown by TC
WinRAR bitness should be the same as TC (both 32bit or both x64).

Re: Tar unpack skipping files inconsistently
Not necessarily. WinRAR is shipped with two context menu extensions, one for each bitness: 64-bit rarext.dll and 32-bit rarext32.dll for WinRAR 64-bit, and 32-bit rarext.dll and rarext64.dll for WinRAR 32-bit.Horst.Epp wrote: 2021-10-21, 12:23 UTCWinRAR bitness should be the same as TC (both 32bit or both x64).
2xtrips
If the WinRAR context menu items are not shown, one of shell extensions is likely not registered correctly. Try the context menu's "x64" submenu.
Keep in mind that .tar archives can contain files whose filenames differ in case only. IIRC TC will complain about such files, though. Would be nice if you could find out what exactly isn't extracted correctly.

Re: Tar unpack skipping files inconsistently
Ok. Let's see. My TC is 32bit. My Winrar is 64bit. Winrar submenu is not showing at all in TC.
What do you recommend I do?
BTW I tried opening TC 64bit version (it comes alongside the 32bit in TC Ultra Prime). The Winrar submenu does not show either.

Re: Tar unpack skipping files inconsistently
If you see the WinRAR context menu items in Explorer, they will be available via the "x64" submenu from with TC 32-bit.

Re: Tar unpack skipping files inconsistently
Well obviously the integration did not go well between Winrar and TC. But it shows fine in Windows Explorer. What do you suggest i do?Dalai wrote: 2021-10-21, 12:58 UTC If you see the WinRAR context menu items in Explorer, they will be available via the "x64" submenu from with TC 32-bit.

Re: Tar unpack skipping files inconsistently
What version of WinRAR do you have installed ?
The actual 6.10 beta1 has a problem to install the context menu entries.
I reverted back to the version 6.02 x64 and the context menus are shown in both the 32bit and x64 TC.
Another question is why do you run a 32bit TC under a x64 OS ?

Re: Tar unpack skipping files inconsistently
You solved it. I reverted to 6.02 and menus appeared. Thank you.Horst.Epp wrote: 2021-10-21, 13:15 UTC What version of WinRAR do you have installed ?

I got your hint. From now on 64bit only.
Re: Tar unpack skipping files inconsistently
Well, that's what can happen when using a beta version. Nothing beats stable software, that's why I never use beta versions in production environments. Testing (beta) software? Sure, in non-production environments, preferably in VMs.Horst.Epp wrote: 2021-10-21, 13:15 UTCThe actual 6.10 beta1 has a problem to install the context menu entries.

The problem came together with the upgrade to Windows 11Dalai wrote: 2021-10-21, 14:43 UTCWell, that's what can happen when using a beta version. which forces restrictions of how many first level context menu can be added from a tool.
WinRAR is the only tool I had problems after the W11 upgrade.
