Synchronize Dirs - difficulties with Confirm delete dialog
Hello,
I find the Synchronize Dirs tool in TC 9.21 fascinating, yet I have a couple of questions about the following details.
Test case scenario:
Step 1 Synchronize Dirs - Compare button - Equal files filter set on
At this point, TC shows a list of folders containing identical files.
Step 2 CTRL+A - Right mouse button - Delete right
At this point, TC shows a Confirm delete dialog that reads as follows:
"RIGHT: Do you really want to move X selected files/directories to the recycle bin?"
Question 1: I suspect that the X number is equal to the sum of identical files count and folders count minus 1.
Is that intentional?
Quick update an hour later:
It looks like the X number shows the sum of files count and number of folders that get empty after Sync.
If that assumption is correct, then I consider this aggregated info difficult to grasp, if not confusing.
Do you think you could improve the statistic report in the Confirm delete dialog?
Question 2: I find the wording in Confirm delete dialog troubling as I translate it as
"You are going to lose the selected folders unconditionally."
Having tested this feature I believe that the tool deletes ONLY folders that get empty after Synchronization.
I would like to invite your comment.
Questions 3: A pertinent question arises as to whether deleting empty folders as per Q2 is expected behavior.
From my standpoint, in most cases it is a preferred behavior, however I would think that a
"Delete empty folders after Sync files" option set ON by default might be helpful.
Your thoughts?
Many thanks,
mmm

Hi mmm,
Please check with an up to date version. Version 9.21 is three years old already.

Whats the problem to update ?
Your TC license allows any version on any computer.
The portable version allows to use it even on systems where you don't have admin rights.

Re: Synchronize Dirs - difficulties with Confirm delete dialog
Dear lord, this conversation is so unproductive.
Well, I am not going to disclose further details on why I cannot install the latest and greatest version. End of story.
Time to get down to business I guess.

mmm,
I have to agree, discussing three year old software which is not used anymore and cannot be changed in any way is indeed unproductive.
To answer your questions, though:

In v.10 it is the amount of files and folders (not minus 1).Question 1: I suspect that the X number is equal to the sum of identical files count and folders count minus 1.

Nothing gets empty after sync if your filter is set to equal files only.It looks like the X number shows the sum of files count and number of folders that get empty after Sync.
It is not.If that assumption is correct
See above.Having tested this feature I believe that the tool deletes ONLY folders that get empty after Synchronization.

Re: Synchronize Dirs - difficulties with Confirm delete dialog
Hacker,
1. I am assuming you are running the latest and greatest version. Please confirm/deny.
2. Re "Nothing gets empty after sync if your filter is set to equal files only."
I am afraid we do not understand each other. Let me clarify:
When you compare two folders with identical contents, then you will get an empty folder after the Sync files phase is complete.
Hope it helps clarify my wording.
3. I am getting confused about the X number in the Confirm delete dialog.
When you complete Step 2 in my procedure at your end, do you get an X number that represents
a) number of identical files only
b) number of folders shown
c) sum of a and b
d) none of the above
Many thanks.

Re: Synchronize Dirs - difficulties with Confirm delete dialog
mmm,
My folder consists of:
File A.txt
File B.txt
Subdir\File C.txt
Subdir\File D.txt
I get the number 5 (File A, B, C, D and Subdir itself, all of which would get deleted if I pressed Ctrl-A, right click, Delete right as per your instructions).
Any reason why you opened this thread in a Bugs forum?

I confirm, I am running the most awesome and amazing version of TC ever created, up to this moment.I am assuming you are running the latest and greatest version. Please confirm/deny
No, this does not happen. If you compare two folders with identical contents, nothing gets synced and the folders remain exactly as they were, unless you explicitly instruct TC / the Sync tool to do otherwise. When you compare two folders with identical contents, then you will get an empty folder after the Sync files phase is complete.
This.c) sum of a and b

I admit I feel rather uncomfortable here.
Any place place I can discuss the Sync Dirs feature outside the reign of yourself ?

If the box: "Empty directories" is selected, the number shown is BOTH files and folder, since both will be deleted
If the box: "Empty directories" is NOT selected, the number only shows the files, since the empty folders will be left.
Note:if you select or deselect the box: "Empty directories" you have to click the Compare button AGAIN, to see the effect of the change.

Well, that only leads us to guess about the reason. I can think of two reasons and neither comes out to your benefit.mmm wrote:Well, I am not going to disclose further details on why I cannot install the latest and greatest version. End of story.
