feature request - search files in the background

Post by *s3n0 »

Hi.

Would it be possible to add a background file/directory search function please ?

It often takes a very long time (sometimes even 1-3 minutes) to search for a file, through an extensive file system. However, I need to work on something else in the meantime, and I also use Total Commander for that. Unfortunately, while searching for a file(s) / folder(s), Total Commander is unusable.

Therefore, it would be convenient if the file search window could be moved to the background, or if the search itself would work automatically in the background of Total Commander application and not in the foreground like the active window of the Total Commander application.

Thanks.

Try: ALT+SHIFT+F7 to start a "Find in separate process"

Or install 'Everything' then the searh takes seconds instead of minutes. https://www.voidtools.com/

Everything is indeed a very good suggestion, just to clarify for those not aware: TC can use Everything if you tick the 'Everything' box in the search dialog.

Check the help documentation for some more info such as ev: and ed: usage in the search field as well.

'Everything' is a nice tool, but I'm not a fan of indexing already indexed data (accumulation of the subsystem table under one table, from all places on the HDD). Today file-systems are really pathetic and ridiculous :D. I'm surprised that nobody has come up with anything new yet. NTFS is imperfect. Even FAT32 was better. It was only necessary to expand FAT32 to FAT512 :). NTFS was probably created because of higher security. But if someone wants to keep their files safe, they use special encryption tools, not the filesystem from the OS :).

I also need Total Commander to be portable, on a USB stick. I don't know for sure if this 'Everything' tool is also functional as a portable.

Running the search in the background (ALT+SHIFT+F7) will suffice.

Thanks guys.

When integrating the tool 'Everything' into search queries in Total Commander, search results can be obtained in real time.

'Everything' can also be used portably - see 1st picture with corresponding setting (picture: 'Everything 1.4').
For a portable 'Everything' version, it might be advisable to use Multiple instances -> Named instances.
