Before adding a custom association and re-associate docx with windows, is there anything you want me to test?

I don't think so, M$-OS and apps are sometimes quizzical

Just "create an internal association" as recommended above by hiFive
viewtopic.php?p=421759#p421759

This is just written to TCs INI and can be removed any time you want.
Exemple:
[Associations]
Filter1=*.pdf
Filter1_open=""TOOLs\aPDF\PDF_reader_Sumatra\SumatraPDF.exe" "%1""

You may also search the forum for similar posts where this had helped....

Obviously, there is something wrong in the registry, since TC does not recognize the association. Therefore I think using Files - Associate with... would be better, as this should "repair" any wrong .docx association within the registry, or, in other words, create it the proper, documented way.

Using TC internal association only works within TC and does not touch the registry. It is a valid way but it does not solve the potential underlying problem.

I'm getting conflicting suggestions! :-D

I'll go with the TC solution, it looks less disruptive for my system

Sure, but the open verb is executed when you press Enter or double-click on a file.

Another solution would be to define an association just for Total Commander:

1. Choose files - internal assocuations - Add
2. Type the extensions which you want to associate, e.g.
*.xlsx
3. Click on "Confirm"
4. In the line "Open with", click on ">>"
5. Choose the editor (e.g. Excel.exe)

Do you mean the context menu function, as I suggested?

I have now added some code that checks for the presence of an "open with" list, and if there is any, don't open as archive. The file can still be opened as an archive with Ctrl+PageDown.
For example, for .docx it looks in:
HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Explorer\FileExts\.docx\OpenWithList
There it checks whether the value MRUlist exists and isn't empty.

So, this could be "fixed" in future version? Do you mean my registry is correct?

Well, first of all, this new version is already available. Download it and try it. https://www.ghisler.ch/board/viewtopic.php?t=77773
and secondly, still your extracts from the registry in many places are very different from those that I see on my computer.
It's clear - I'm not saying that I have an ideal installation options and the data from the registry is perfect ...
BUT! obviously, it will not hurt you in any way to do a complete uninstall of the entire Office and reinstall it from scratch.

- right cklick the word document file and create a shortcut
- right cklick the word document file shortcut

- choose Properties
- choose the Shortcut tab

- click the [Change Icon...]-button
- [Browse] and navigate to an *.ico or *.exe file
e.g. browse to the msWord.exe

- double click on one file which provide icons
- click OKs until done

- delete the above created shortcut-file
