How to change the default image viewer from "Windows Photo Viewer" to "Photos app"
Hi.
I have Windows 11.
Right now, double clicking on a picture, photo, JPG, PNG opens the old Windows Photo Viewer with the error like this:
"Windows Photo Viewer cannot display this image because your computer may not have enough memory. Close some programs that you are not using or free up some hard disk space (if it is almost full), and then try again."
Doesn't show the picture.
It should open the Photos app.

Place the cursor on a jpg file, and then choose menu Files - Associate.
There should be a checkbox to substitute the viewer, you need to uncheck it.

Re: How to change the default image viewer from "Windows Photo Viewer" to "Photos app"
I am with windows 10 and get sometimes the same error message “Windows Photo Viewer cannot display this image because your computer may not have enough memory. Close some programs that you are not using or free up some hard disk space (if it is almost full), and then try again."
I suppose the default viewer in TC (from Win 7) needs to be replaced with the new windows Photos Viewer.
Thanks for the tip with file association - it worked.

Re: How to change the default image viewer from "Windows Photo Viewer" to "Photos app"
Howdie Team,
I prefer to use the newer in-built windows 10 picture viewer as well. When I unclick the file associate and activate the newer version of the photo app, I am unable to move to the next photo in the directory.
When I use the old version of the photo app I am able to navigate through the photos inside the directory.
Is there any way to enable to the navigation inside the newer app when opening a jpg from within TC?
I noticed that when you open the new photo app from windows explorer, navigation is enabled.
Hope that makes sense....

The best solution is to use one of the available Lister plugins.
IrfanView, PhotoViewer, Imagine
Windows 11 Home, Version 24H2 (OS Build 26100.3915)
TC 11.51 x64 / x86
Everything 1.5.0.1391a (x64), Everything Toolbar 1.5.2.0, Listary Pro 6.3.2.88
QAP 11.6.4.2.1 x64
TC 11.51 x64 / x86
Everything 1.5.0.1391a (x64), Everything Toolbar 1.5.2.0, Listary Pro 6.3.2.88
QAP 11.6.4.2.1 x64

This is an old post, but I thought it was sort of an issue in my computer only and it was getting me crazy. Glad that I'm not the only one.
The old photo viewer does not work well with HDR, and photos looks dark unless yo start and "slideshow"
I'm playing with the file association now. the ones in the list opens the old photo viewer. I will create a new photo association and test Thanks!

Total Commander 11.03 now uses the new "photos app" by default, because I found a way to open it with the option to browse through images in the same folder.

Hello. This option not work for me, when I open any image in folder with images is opening only single image, and there is not arrows and not possible to move to next image by left and right arrows keys.ghisler(Author) wrote: 2024-05-24, 10:02 UTC Total Commander 11.03 now uses the new "photos app" by default, because I found a way to open it with the option to browse through images in the same folder.
I've removed all my configuration, unninstall TC and install TC 11.03 and still not work. I have Win11 22H2 and Windows Photo App in latest version.
Please help because navigate the images by arrow keys is very important function for me and I want to work with Windows Photo App instead of old Photo Viewer...

Are you running Total Commander with higher user rights (As Administrator)? The function doesn't work in this case.
