Add "EXCLUDE search is these Folders" option in Search

Post by *s4t »

Hi Christian,
Total Commander's Search F7 finally got on my nerves. How come this option is not in the Total Commander? How come tens of millions of its users can stand this PITA for decades? Users are users, all are notorious procrastinators. All wait somebody else will report the bug or suggest an improvement. For 30 years for example no one reported to Microsoft about the bug in its Notepad which highlights with the mouse the words incorrectly - it also highlights the following commas, points and spaces (!!!).
As to my suggestion - I literally afraid to search lately my disk C, it takes forever to get through C:\Windows\servicing, C:\Windows\WinSxS and so on which keep tons of files to reinstall Windows, or folders with cache for browsers etc. Searches are super-slow even on NVMe drives which are 10x faster than even SSD. Please (!!!) add the option "Exclude Search in these directories".
And also please add the button which allows to skip dynamically the search in current folder when Total Commander gets stuck in some huge directories you know your file is not there. With such "search facilitator" button you will help TC to do the job an order of magnitude faster. These are absolutely obvious improvements of Total Commander which is very easy to implement.

There are many options to restrict the pathes which are searched
and also complete dirs can be ignored.
To simply search of any files accross the whole system TC users have the Everything integration
which makes normal searches in a few seconds.
Windows 11 Home, Version 24H2 (OS Build 26100.4061)
TC 11.55 RC2 x64 / x86
Everything 1.5.0.1391a (x64), Everything Toolbar 1.5.2.0, Listary Pro 6.3.2.88
QAP 11.6.4.4 x64

You could also
- add the folder yourself to the ignore list
or
- click on a folder in the status line during search to skip it once (with conformation)

Thanks Horst and Christian! That was an ultimate solution i always missed. Afraid no one knows that it exists. Please make some nice advertisement for it when people do searches

In Linux i use the closest twin of TC called Double Commander. But i miss TC for Linux. In ARM the Ghost Commander was not bad. But again the exact WIndows TC would be better. I am surprised to disbelief why Windows or Linux or other OS devs not see that TC is immensely better than all their utter junk they ever made? Clearly not the best talent is creating OSes. TC is literally #1 app of all times. I have 7 of them different colors running simultaneously. The problem is always to open all of them as an Admin after restart :D :D :D

UPDATE.
Still my suggestion to add avoiding specific directories and adding the button to skip search in current dir and all its folders seems necessary. Even with Everything on if you search include archives the search quickly scanning Everything then goes usual slow way as usual. And i tried but have not find the way to avoid search in Windows folders for example.

Or i still miss something ?

s4t,
adding the button to skip search in current dir and all its folders seems necessary
The Help file says:
The status line (footer) shows the directory currently being searched, and the file details after the search has finished. With a click on a part of the directory it is possible to skip that directory (after confirmation).

It would be highly recommended if you would at least specify the following values for requests (please also see my signature):
  1. Total Commander version + x64, x86, e.g. Total Commander (x64) 10.52
  2. Windows Version (winver, msinfo32.exe, Windows logo key + Pause key (System > About))
  3. Tool 'Everything' version, e.g. Everything 1.5.0.1332a (x64) or Everything-1.4.1.1022.x64
Search results [almost] in Real-time
TC + Everything; TC + Everything + Windows Search; Everything; Everything + Windows Search
  1. If you use the tool 'Everything' you should get search results directly in Everything in real-time.
If not, it may be due to your settings. Example (image) for a standard installation
  2. Search results in TC - with the integration of Everything - are obtained almost in real-time,
as TC still needs some time for the preparation of the search results.
  3. Search results in TC - using the Windows Search (only possible with the use of Everything) -
are also obtained almost in real time.
  4. Search results in Everything using Windows Search are obtained in real-time.

Here are some test search results after a PC cold start.
Search criteria: C:\Windows\servicing\, C:\Windows\WinSxS\ (search both folders simultaneously)

    Code: Select all

    Everything 1.5.0.1332a (x64):
    Search query ........: C:\Windows\servicing\|C:\Windows\WinSxS\
    Search results ......: 127 663 objects (91 670 files, 35 993 folders)
    Search result display: ~1 Second

    Total Commander (x64) 10.52 using Everything 1.5.0.1332a (x64):
    Search query ........: ev:C:\Windows\servicing\|C:\Windows\WinSxS\
    Search result display: ~13 Seconds

    1. Command: Commandbrowser -> View -> cm_SwitchIgnoreList 2922 Enable/disable ignore list file to not show file names
    2. "F1 - Help" - Search: Ignore -> Dialog box: Configuration: Ignore list
    3. HISTORY.TXT: The ignore list has been around for at least Total Commander 7.50 Beta 1 (16.11.07)
    Additional info:
    1. Everything 1.4, 1.5 - Search query: !C:\Windows\servicing;C:\Windows\WinSxS wrpintapi.dll
Everything does NOT find the wrpintapi.dll file, because these two folders were excluded from the search query
and this file is only in these two folders.
      '!' = NOT operator.
    2. Everything 1.5: Menu "Index" - "Enable Result Omissions" - Add Omit Result Filter...
is another possibility in Everything 1.5 Alpha to temporarily exclude results from the search result(s).
    3. Everything 1.5: Option to always exclude specific folders?

    1. Archives
Total Commander can find files and content in archives (not indexed).

Everything can find files in ZIP archives:
Everything - Search zip files for the specified semicolon (;) delimited list of filenames.
      Examples:
container-file-name:Arrow Yellow.bmp -> finds the file "Arrow Yellow.bmp" in .zip files, e.g. in the file "Arrow Yellow.zip".
container-file-name:Arrow Yellow -> finds .zip files that contain "Arrow Yellow" in the name, e.g. the file "Arrow Yellow.zip".

The Windows Search is able to search in ZIP archives for files - with a corresponding setting in the indexing options.
Windows Search can be accessed from Everything, e.g. with the parameter si: -> search query: si:"search term" OR si:searchterm
Windows Search can be accessed from TC using Everything integration: -> search query: ev:si:"search term" or ev:si:searchterm

Everything is currently unable to search content in archives.
Windows Search is currently unable to search content in archives.

    2. Windows Search - Search for: indexing options > call up indexing options by clicking on it > then click the "Change" button >
      ☑ > Local Disk (C:)... Click on '>'
      ☑ > Windows ... Click on '>'
      ▢  > servicing ... Uncheck this folder
      ▢  > WinSxS ...... Uncheck this folder
      ...
The folders permanently excluded from indexing are displayed below this window and then also in the main window.
A non-indexed search is possible, but takes much(!) longer.
