COPY ONLY MODIFIED FILES

Post by *Monty »

Hi, from time to time I use TC to make backups of files to an external hard disk, but due to the great amount of files i have I would only copy the new files or some of the olders if I have modified them. How can i do this task with F5?
I used "replace formers" but that is not exactly what I want to do.

Thank you very much

In copy dialog there is a Options button with additional parameters. E.g. you may choose to replace older files - it will replace only modified ones.

You can define a selection which you can select in the F5 copy dialog under Only files of this type.

To define a selection select menu option Mark/Select Group, then click the Define button. (Or alternatively use the Search dialog by using the Load/Save tab)

You can for instance define a selection to select only files with the archive bit set. (tab Advanced, check Attributes, check Archive)

After you have saved your selection you will find your selection in the copy dialog under Only files of this type when you click the small button at the end of the input box. The predefined selections are listed at the bottom. Alternatively you can also type the name of your saved selection and precede it with ">".

I think that option copy older files but the criteria used for that purpose is searching for DATES, and those which dates are older will be replaced. I look for Bytes criteria.

How can TC know that copied file is newer than the one from backup? By date? By size? By other criteria?

Maybe you should try synchronization dialog?

To copy only new or modified files using F5 in Total Commander, you can use the "Synchronize directories" function.
-Select the source and destination folders in Total Commander
-Press F5 to open the "Copy/Move" dialog
-Choose "Synchronize directories" from the "Copy options" dropdown menu
-In the "Synchronize directories" dialog, select the options to "Copy newer files only" and "Update older files"
-You can also choose to exclude specific files or directories from the synchronization process
-Press the "Start" button to begin the synchronization process

EDIT:

the user above, charlotee, has edited his post and removed the hint to that "enterprise grade-data migration software" now

- - -

Hi and welcome charlotee

What is your intent to answer here after 13 years and on the same way do advertising for Gs <name removed>?

GS <name removed> 360 is an enterprise grade-data migration software. It makes a copy of your data (files and folders) to another location.
Starting Price: $129 one-time payment

-You can also choose to exclude specific files or directories from the synchronization process

This can not be about Total Commander!

In Total Commander:
F5 opens the Copy dialog, not a Copy/Move dialog
There is no "Synchronize directories" option in the Copy dialog - TC has a special "Synchronize directories" dialog.
There are no "Copy newer files only" and "Update older files" options (there is 8 Overwrite options though)
There is no "Start" button in neither the Copy dialog nor the Synchronize directories dialog.
