Cloud plugin - How to save the master password ?

Post by *raytc »

No matter what I do, I can't manage to save the master password.

Every time I open TC and want to go to Dropbox, for example, TC asks for the master password again.

Use Windows Hello to keep Password stored is enabled.

What did I wrong?

ps: I use Cloud plugin 2.50 (the latest release)

As far as I understand things there's no way 'to save' master password.
Nothing personal. Just security grounds.
So you have to type your master password each time upon access to sensitive data.
At best, I would recommend using either a [secure but still] typeable master password, or a password manager.

As beb already said, use a password manager.
KeePass works perfect inside and outside of TC.

I think the request is to connect automatically, without requiring to enter any password.

Roman
Mal angenommen, du drückst Strg+F, wählst die FTP-Verbindung (mit gespeichertem Passwort), klickst aber nicht auf Verbinden, sondern fällst tot um.

That can be done using KeePass.
You hit one hotkey or if its a web page Auto-Fill with the Kee plugins takes place.

Horst.Epp,
No, it cannot, you still need to enter a master password into KeePass beforehand, or use another authentication method, so if automatically connecting is the request, KeePass is no more useful than a clipboard manager.

Total Commander stores the master password with Windows Hello only while it (Total Commander) is running. That means that you have to re-enter the master password every time you close and run Total Commander again.

Why?
Windows Hello is insecure in saving passwords: Any desktop program can request a password stored by any other program, and the user will receive a fingerprint request from Windows Hello which doesn't give a clue which program requested it (the string shown can be set by the called program), and for what purpose.

Therefore Total Commander encrypts the master password with a temporary random number before storing it in Windows Hello. So when other apps would request the master password to steal it, they couldn't access it. But this only works as long as Total Commander is running, because it needs the random number to decrypt the master password. If it stored that random number somewhere, other programs could use it to decrypt the master password.

Thank you all for your replies. Awesome!

I have just tried to change the password.

"To change the master password, try to connect as usual. In the master password dialog, enter the old password, then click on the button 'change master password'."

However, I do not see a "change master password" button.

Press Ctrl+F (or via menu: "Net" -> "FTP Connect")
Click on the button "Encrypt"
Click on the button "Change master password"

Where did you read this?:

Thanks for your answer. I didn't manage it.
I entered the old master password. Then the program asked for my fingerprint to make sure it was me, then the same thing again. After that nothing more.

Please uncheck "Use Windows hello" when asked for the old master password. I will check why there is a Windows Hello dialog, there shouldn't be any in this situation.

I have fixed the problem in Total Commander 11 beta 8, no more need to uncheck "Use Windows Hello".
