Search in comments

Post by *NotNull »

In TC one can create descript.ion's ("comments") for files. So there is an option to search through these comments too ... right?
Can't find it.

Example: Search for *.jpg with "Jamaica" in the comment.

Where does this option hide itself?

Search for files - ALT+F7 (or ALT+SHIFT+F7 for Search in separate Process)
General tab: Search for: *.jpg
Plugins tab:
Plugin - tc
property - comment
OP - contains
Value - Jamaica

Check the Plugins tab and select tc.comment there.

Is there a way to set a shortcut to search through comments in TC?

Save the search via the Load/Save tab first. The search can then be loaded later, so only the comment needs to be entered.

NB: The path should be removed from the "Search in" field before saving the search, if you want to be able to search in the current directory.

Better yet:
[Help - Find files: General] wrote: Put '>' character in this field before saving the search to keep the "Search in" field unchanged when loading the saved search.
Further automation is possible by using the LoadSearch command:
[Help - Dialog box: Configuration - Change button bar] wrote: LOADSEARCH saved_search_name opens search function with saved search. An equal sign "=" in front of the name will start the search immediately, two equal signs will show the results directly in Total Commander.

Isn't Comment property from TC plugin in TCSearch>Plugins easier to use?

Sure, but if the only Plugin you want to use from the "Find text" in the "General" tab is the tc.comment then it might be easier to turn it on and off in the "General" tab than in the "Plugins" tab. Also the staus of "Plugins" in the "General" tab is saved between TC sessions, the state of "Search in plugins" is not saved between sessions.

On the other hand - if you ONLY want to find files with a certain comment, using the "Find text" in the "General" tab - you would have to disable all the other options (ANSI, UTF-8 etc.) - that is not necessary when using the "Plugins" tab
