In-place rename in file list should treat '.' as a non-word character

In the text box for the filename / file path of Total Commander's Rename... or Copy... dialog windows, I can use the End key to go to the end of the field (to the right of the file extension) and then Strg-Left to go to the dot before the extension. This is not possible with the Rename popup thingy in the file list. Here, Strg-Left skips over the dot and goes to nearest hyphen or whichever non-alphabetic character. It would be great if in situ rename could behave in the same way as the dialogs.

By the way, I've often thought that in these situations it would be more comfortable if the extension were generally handled separately from the filename, i. e. if there was a second text field containing only the extension. That would make editing filenames a good deal more comfortable as the extension often gets in the way in my experience. Perhaps changing the extension should also be a separate command from Rename in general. (I know, probably not a popular opinion!)

Alternatively, it would be helpful if there were two different keystrokes for moving to the end of the text field (after the extension) and moving between the filename and the extension, say End and Alt-End. Probably jumping to the dot should actually be the default action for End. Currently, End followed by Strg-Left seems to be the best way to navigate to the latter position, but as I pointed out, this does not work with Rename in the file list.

It would be interesting to know the percentage of rename actions by users that end up actually changing the extension - a single digit percentage?

Try Configuration - Options - Operations - Select only the file name when renaming (not the extension).

Strg-Left to go to the dot before the extension

After Shift-F6, press the right arrow key.

Thanks, I have had that option enabled and have been doing exactly what you describe. This is fine when I just want to edit the filename in one place but when it's a more complex change or you change your mind in between and want to go back to the end of the filename to change / add characters, things start to get messy with the extension. Have to press End and cursor Left a couple of time to get there.
