To show icons, change your buttons to use wcmicons.dll :)

Hi *p

Yes, you are right. Combining the commands does the trick. So only two buttons needed.

Is there a trick to switch between file/folder names truncation methods ?

It contains icons in higher resolution than wcmicons.dll. It is a Ghisler product and is used automatically as a substitute for wcmicons.dll by TC just by placing the file in TC's program folder.

That is also why I sometimes forget to replace wciconex.dll with wcmicons.dll - because TC automatically inserts wciconex.dll when I make a new button with a cm_command.

Truncation where? In the file panels? - no, not as far as I know.

HYPO wrote: 2023-08-07, 07:27 UTC But I miss ( ~ haven't found any ) command to switch how a long filename gets shown. Normally TC just cuts off at the column edge, but it would occasionally be nice to view the start and end of a filename like 'my very long ... filename' instead of 'my very long and windy..'.
Are you aware of the option Show filename as tooltip if truncated?

Hi *w and *p

Thanks for the reference to tooltip.

I know the reason for my asking is related to a pretty rare circumstance.

Think of a situation where somebody has made a very long filename. And then somebody else revise it and saves it with the same filename just adding v1 or a date or something else to the end of the filename. That was pretty common in the old days.

If you happen to look into a folder holding a larger number of such silly named files they all look the same due to truncation/cut until you manually hover over each to find which was v2 or v3 or whatever. In that case it is an advantage if you could select to see the start and the end of the filename and skip some characters in the middle.

Hi

Not directly related to single or double column display, but

>>> Is there a way to control whether the content in the Size column is Left Aligned -or- Right Aligned ?

I would prefer Right Aligned.

A <DIR> entry is strictly Left Aligned.

A File Size entry is oddly Right Aligned. It is Right Aligned but doesn't use the full width of the Size Column. And it grows into the Ext column if space requires it.

The cosmetic problem is only seen when long Folder or File names are used that is cut when reaching the Size column. Right Alignment would look better.

That is a special featyre of TC's Full View. just adjust the Size column so wide the the space between Size and Date suits you, and the adjust the Ext column until there is the space for displaying the size that you need.

If you want conventinal right aligned Size column the you have to use Custom columns.

You can see the difference between FillView (left) an Custom View (right) - both the same columns - here: https://tcmd.madsenworld.dk/FullVsCustomView.png

In Full View it is not just the size that can expand into the Ext column, it is also the extension that can expand into the size column, as you can see from the first two files.
The Custom columns you see in the right side of the screenshot can only show up to 999.999.999 bytes thereafter it will show 1.000.000...
The Full view at the left side can show 999.999.999.999 bytes for folders and files without an extension.

Hi again

The Custom Column's suggestion works just as I need it, when remembering to click on 'Adjust Tabs to window width', so it works works properly both in horizontal mode as well as in vertical mode.

Makes the view 'cleaner' when you have many folders and files where a long name must be cut-off.

Brilliant.

I don't see how Custum columns view helps reading long file names - but maybe you meant that using Vertical panels helps.

Hi

With a Right Aligned Size column we have a straight vertical cut-off of long folder and file names.

With the default Left Aligned Size column concept then a long name and file length number ends up separated by just two dots and a space. And the file length number is allowed to extend into the name space effective causing an zig-zag'ed column separation. The same applies to folders where the Left Aligned <DIR> indicator is also just separated by two dots and a space from a too-long-to-show-all folder name.

All this is of course only relevant for long names. I happen to have a document setup where adequate separation between name and size makes skimming the list easier.

It were there, on my web, but my webhost provider automatically deletes all .rar and .7z files - I am negotiating to have that policy removed for my site, but apparently it takes time.

I am thinking of repacking all the rar and 7z files I had on my web - but should I repack them as zip files, or should I just pack the original 7z or rar file in a zip file? No matter if I do one or the other, all links to these files that I might have made in this forum will be broken.
