Annoying flash/flicker in Quick View

Post by *Ivan »

When I move between images (usually small jpgs) in Quick View there's a very obvious white flash as it loads the new image. It looks like it's filling the panel with white then loading the new image, but without syncing to the vertical retrace. When I move between images in Universal Viewer there's no visible transition.

Apart from being annoying and visually tiring, it makes it very hard to compare images for small changes. I can't see any settings that might affect this.

1. Do you observe this without plugins?
2. The picture doesn't fit entirely into the window?
3. If there is a flicker, if Photoviewer or Imagine is first on the list?

I see no flicker if TC's internal viewer is set as default for the filetypes
With Imagine or PhotoViewer plugins as default I see a distinct flicker when i click the next image in TC's file panel.
But if I with Imagine or PhotoViewer plugins put focus on the QuickView window and press Space to let the plugin load the next image, then I do NOT see any flicker.

So I guess the flickering comes from TC unloading/loading the plugin,

And what about the 2nd question?
If I disable "Fit image to window" or "Fit only larger images to window" in Listers Option, then Imagine respects that, and when the whole QuickView area is filled out with a part of the image, I do NOT see any flickering.

PhotoViewer does not respect TC's fit image settings, and I cannot see a way to make PhotoViewer start up in a non-fitted view, I always have to press F.

As i wrote, TC's internal viewer does not flicker in QuickView, and that is neither with image fit enabled or not.

I have the opposite situation: only when the options are enabled or the image doesn't go beyond the panel borders, I don't see any flicker when navigating higher/lower in the list of the active panel.
PhotoViewer does not respect TC's fit image settings, and I cannot see a way to make PhotoViewer start up in a non-fitted view, I always have to press F.
I know about this bug.

Hi and thanks for replying.

1. I don't think I have any plugins. The external viewer (F4) is Universal Viewer, but afaik that isn't used by TC''s built-in Quick View. So, I have one panel containing jpgs, press ^Q for Quick View, and move between images with the arrow keys, and get flicker.

2. QV scales the image to fit the panel. I've just noticed that it only flickers moving between small images, not large ones. I don't know yet at what size the flicker disappears, but images of screen resolution or higher don't flicker, and ones under say 1,000 x 1,000 do.

3. I don't what Photoviewer or Imagine are so probably aren't using them

Hi again. I just installed Imagine and Quick View seems to uses that, and no longer flickers on small images, which is brilliant.

However it mow flickers on large images, badly. Is there a way to enable/disable this plugin for when I know in advance that I will be working with either small or large images?

There is no such option. Only by script.
Check how it works with Photoviewer (over Imagine).
Also see if there is a difference in behavior when minimizing all windows except TC.

Thanks, Photoviewer doesn't flicker at all and seems perfect (except for the permanent toolbar, ha ha, never satisfied :-)

If you want get rid of flickering in Imagine try this:
View image in Imagine - F3 or Ctrl+Q
Right click on image - Options -Preferences - View (tab)
Uncheck option "Display image while loading" - http://gral.y0.pl/tc/images/displayimage.png

You're welcome. The toolbar can be removed by right-clicking on it and unchecking the lower option. You can return it from the context menu by right-clicking on the picture: Setup > Toolbar Visible

Uncheck option "Display image while loading"
I already had that option disabled - and I still see flickering if the image does not fill out the window.

But it helps significantly on the flickering if I in the same configuration tab turn off "Use antialiasing"
