Not confirmed.
Here it's show with the document symbol as in Explorer.
Maybe you have an TC internal association with a non-standard XML tool ?
Windows 11 Home, Version 24H2 (OS Build 26100.3915)

No.
Showicons=1 is the default value.
F1 - Help: Showicons=2 ... Icons: 0=no, 1=default, 2=all

Showicons=2:
The icon is then displayed in TC as in Windows Explorer -> icon NOT shown as folder.

WIN+i > Apps > Standard-Apps > Select default values by file type > Enter .xml ...
The default file type for .xml is:
Microsoft Edge
Microsoft Edge HTML Document

The file association must be broken, please try my registryinfo tool:

The default file type for .xml is:
What is YOUR default app for the .xml file type?

Can you assign an application to this file type?

Right-click on an .xml file:
Open with > Microsoft Edge
- OR -
Open with > Select another app > Microsoft Edge -> Click on the "Always" button *)

*) A click on the "Always" button in Windows 11 Pro recently did not have the desired effect,
i.e. the function was executed "only once".

In such a case, I would proceed as follows:
WIN+i > Apps > Default apps > in the "Enter a file type or link type" field, enter .xml >
I would then select "Microsoft Edge" as the default app for .xml files.

Does that solve the issue for you or not?

not really
the question still remains - why was the icon initially different from the explorer?

That's a really good question.
With Horst.Epp in Windows 11 Home and with me in Windows 11 Pro, the icon was present by default.

Maybe it was the setting: Showicons=? -OR- "no applications found (с)" that caused this on your PC.
Unfortunately, I can't answer that - for me, the subject is now closed.
