Came here searching for the same issue and I would like to thank for the answers. I am working with image sizes up to 3000 pixels and mostly on SSD, so for me:

- Completely disabling the cache sped up generation of thumbnail 5-10 times (Configuration -> cleared Database Location)
- Changing "Get for lister plugins for:" to *.* | *.png *.jpg *.gif *.bmp improved the speed again 3-5 times

It is crazy fast now, so thanks again

I wonder which Lister plugins you have installed which makes loading of thumbnails that slow.
