Rename File - Select Just File Name, Without Extension

Post by *N1ka »

Hi,
I couldn't find a discussion about this topic, so I opened a new one.

Nor rarely I save a picture from Viber, which gives it a generic name like "wer59w54z6jgsdpoftj3wq946p0uzhsćgpaw34235".

When I want to rename it, I get pre-selected "wer59w54z6jgsdpoftj3wq946p0uzhsćgpaw34235.jpg". Then I have to click in front of ".jpg", and delete, delete, delete, delete, delete.... from last to first character of the file name, and then enter the new, desired name.

Is there an option to pre-select just a name, without an extension on "rename" command? (like in windows)?

Thanks,
Cheers,
Nika

For me, if I chose Rename on "wer59w54z6jgsdpoftj3wq946p0uzhsćgpaw34235.jpg",
((( https://www.ghisler.com/android/help.htm#menu_file_rename )))

the cursor is already at the end of the base name >>> "wer59w54z6jgsdpoftj3wq946p0uzhsćgpaw34235|.jpg"

and I just press on backspace once and hold on pressing, and soon is the whole base name deleted and I can start typing the new name.

Lucky you...

I tried your method. When I select the file from the Total commander, and start the rename command, indeed, the cursor is at the end of the file name, but, in my case, I have to keep "delete" pressed as it deletes one by one character, and the name is often much longer then in my example (might be related to keyboard - I use Jbak2 keyboard).
I tried again from Viber, share to Totalcommander, "save file as" prompt appears, and nothing is preselected, no cursor is positioned.
(I used to struggle to position the cursor right between the name and the extension - that is one of the reasons why I use Jbak2 keyboard: I custom-made a layout with <> keys, so if I miss position the cursor, I can navigate left - right...)
So, when I long tap the name - everything is selected, both File name and Extension...

I wonder if it is possible to preselect just a name on "rename" command (or select just a name on long tap) - I can't imagine a situation when someone would change the name AND the extension with "rename" command (and in that rare situations - the extension could be selected manually)
In windows, it is solved in a great way - press F2 once - file name is preselected. Press F2 again - the extension is added to selection.

Don't you get a "handle" then at the start and the end of the selected? - I do, and I can just move the right handle to the left (before the last dot).

Yes, I have.
Let's take a real example.
"IMG-1072c69a116438086ccbd324a963700a-V.jpg"

When I move the handle, it is very hard to position it in front of the dot. It often jumps from a-, V, to behind the dot.
If I stand still, have time, am not nervous, my wife is not complaining, kids are not fighting, then yes - it is possible to position it right, but, again - is it so hard to code it to select just the name of the file, without the extension?
Am I the only one that thinks "it is logical to pre-select JUST the name of the file, without extension"?
How often are you renaming the file, AND changing the extension?

Fair enough - yes an option to always preselect the file name could be nice.

But still, if I do what Stefan2 suggests just hold down the Backspace button on the keyboard, the whole file name is deleted at once, if there are no spaces in the name, and deletes from one space to the next if there are spaces in the name.

I suppose it is the keyboard feature - mine deletes just one by one character... I will try later with default keyboard to see if there is a difference.
