[Solved] Some TortoiseGit overlays missing

Post by *jonathanpoulin »

Hi,

I have a problem about TortoiseGit overlays for TC 32-bit version only.

I have installed the TC 11.03 32-bit and 64-bit version. So, I can compare easily.

On TC 64-bit version, everything is okay about TortoiseGit overlays. I can see all of them, for every status.

However, with TC 32-bit version, the files and directories overlays for at least the status 'Ignored' are missing. The other ones are there, like 'Normal', 'Added', and 'Modified'. So, this is really strange! :?

Btw, my following Windows registry key contains exclusively TortoiseGit subkeys, so that's not the problem here.
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Explorer\ShellIconOverlayIdentifiers

Someone has the same problem?

Windows limits the number of overlay icons to 15, with 4 reserved for Windows overlays like link files. See e.g.
https://superuser.com/questions/1166577/why-does-windows-limit-icon-overlays-to-15

Now when a program adds its overlays, other programs have to live with what is remaining. If you have a 32-bit shell extension installed for something else, e.g. Dropbox, it will steal overlay space from TortoiseGit.

You can use a tool like ShellExView to turn off unneeded shell extensions:

Hi Christian,

Okay, I will maybe give ShellExView a try (I think I used it in the past).

But, I think I just found out in the registry what is the cause of the problem I exposed. I will try something and get back with the results here after.

Ok, this is fixed. The thing is that I forgot about the other registry key below (used for 32-bit):
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\WOW6432Node\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Explorer\ShellIconOverlayIdentifiers

I have now all the TortoiseGit overlays in Total Commander!

All good! :D

You can change the subject of your first post yourself. That will do it. ;)
