DOCX files have no icon and open as zip files

Post by *pdario »

Hello,
I remember something similar in the past, but can't find anything.

On a fresh installation on a new PC, the docx files have no icon and open as zip files; this happens in TC only, File Explorer is fine.

How can I solve?

Thank you!

Help wrote:PreferOpenTypes=+ File types for which a double click should prefer opening them via Explorer instead of as archives. By default, the most common Office xml file types like *.docx will be used.
Start the line with "+" to add more types, e.g. PreferOpenTypes=+*.ext1 *.ext2
or leave out the "+" to just the given types, e.g. PreferOpenTypes=*.docx *.xlsx
or add types behind pipe symbol | which should in any case be opened as archives, e.g. PreferOpenTypes=*.docx *.xlsx | *.pptx to open pptx files as archives.

CtrlArrowOpenArchive=5 Controls whether Ctrl+Left/Right arrow opens archives as folders or not:
0: never
1: if ENTER would open the archive as a folder
2: always, except when [Packer] ZIPlikeDirectory=0
3: always
4: (added) put cursor on file if not opened.
8: (added) take PreferOpenTypes into account (only with value 1)
This option does not affect search - feed to listbox mode
history.txt wrote:21.10.22 Added: PreferOpenTypes: All file types after the pipe symbol | will be opened internally as an archive, even if there is an association, e.g. PreferOpenTypes=+|*.docx (32/64)

20.10.22 Fixed: Open documents like a ZIP archive if they don't have a common office xml extension although they have an "open with" list. Default: *.docx *.docm *.dotx *.dotm *.xlsx *.xlsm *.xltx *.xltm *.pptx *.pptm *.ppsx *.potx *.potm *.vsdx *.odt *.ods *.odp *.odg (32/64)
20.10.22 Fixed: Open documents like .docx as a ZIP archive when they don't have an entry for the extension in HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT although they have an "open with" list (32/64)

13.10.22 Fixed: Do not open documents like .docx like a ZIP file when they have an "open with" list in the registry (HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Explorer\FileExts\.docx\OpenWithList, value MRUlist) (32/64)

On a fresh installation on a new PC, the docx files have no icon and open as zip files; this happens in TC only, File Explorer is fine.
If someone has the same problem, please use my tool RegistryInfo to gather information about the misbehaving file association, then please post it here:
https://www.totalcommander.ch/win/registryinfo.zip

The problem is that in the registry the key "UserChoice" which would normally indicate which program to open is missing, but Explorer is still opening the file with a program. So far I could not find any documentation how this is handled by Explorer.
