[TC 11.50b1] Still missing in help: meaning of ** as path to icon file for internal associations

Post by *white »

MVV wrote: 2010-08-21, 17:29 UTC You may specify ** as path to icon file - in this case TC will show associated in Windows icons for files that matches this internal association.
MVV wrote: 2020-01-01, 10:27 UTC .. I can use system icons using ** (BTW this is not mentioned in help) ..
Still not mentioned in help page "Dialog box: Edit file type (internal associations)".

What do you mean? To keep the system icons, just leave the icon path empty.

Then it will use the icon for the associated program.

It's for the case when you want to assign a program to a file type using internal associations, but want to keep the icon from the Windows association.

A crazy example to demonstrate:
Assign *.jpg to "Notepad" using internal associations. The icon changes to Notepad. Enter "**" as icon file and it will use the icon of the Windows association (although it opens with Notepad).

Interesting side effect, I will document it. The official way is only described in the German help: Setting the icon file to %1 uses the original icon.

Do you have a better suggestion than the following?
Change icon
Define the icon shown in Total Commander to the left of he associated file. Leave empty to use icon from "Open" action, or set to %1 or ** to use icon of system association.

Well, I wouldn't spell "the" as "he" ;)
Perhaps be more descriptive, like this:
Define the icon shown in Total Commander to the left of the associated file. Leave the field for the icon's filename empty to use the icon from the "Open" action, or set it to %1 or ** to use the icon from the system association.
