Could Total Commander be used as a File Manager, Digital Asset Manager (DAM), and Zettelkasten? Nearly all computer users need a File Manager. They also need a DAM to organize and find their own files, because they have so many files. And present note taking programs have major limitations.
The huge DAM vacuum
Pimcore is a Digital Asset Manager (DAM) that runs on UNIX servers. This is how large companies manage their huge collections of digital assets, products, photos, manuals, letters, brochures, and help files. There are many other DAMs, some cost U$5,000 per year per user. Assets can be retrieved and displayed using various search tools. I run a 1 person company. This complexity and pricing is not in my league. There are millions of other users in the same boat. Nearly all low cost or free DAMs like Adobe Bridge are only designed for cataloging photographs, they can't search for text inside documents.
What is the difference between a Digital Asset Manager (DAM) and a File Manager?
Sounds similar to the definition of a DAM?A file manager or file browser is a computer program that provides a user interface to manage files and folders. [1] The most common operations performed on files or groups of files include creating, opening (e.g. viewing, playing, editing or printing), renaming, copying, moving, deleting and searching for files, as well as modifying file attributes, properties and file permissions. Folders and files may be displayed in a hierarchical tree based on their directory structure.
My digital Zettelkasten project using Affinity Publisher/Designer/Photo
There are over 100 digital note taking programs available. The best type of notes are visual notes. But there is no note taking program presently that can combine text, vector, and raster graphics of a high quality, for example that authors could directly use to produce a book. So I plan on creating my own note taking system, for my own use, using Affinity Publisher/Designer/Photo files which have a very small minimum file size. This format is compressed and binary, not unlike Adobe Acrobat pdf documents. There is no way of directly searching for text inside Affinity Publisher/Designer/Photo files because no previewer has been created for it. It's the same problem as cataloging photographs however. This were DAMs come in, as they specialize in searching by metadata rather than text. Affinity Publisher/Designer/Photo files could be converted to Adobe Acrobat documents, now text can be searched, but this adds another layer of complexity.A Zettelkasten (German: 'slipbox', plural Zettelkästen) or card file consists of small items of information stored on Zettels (German: 'slips'), paper slips or cards, that may be linked to each other through subject headings or other metadata such as numbers and tags. It has often been used as a system of note-taking and personal knowledge management for research, study, and writing.
An all in one
I want an all in one program that can be a file manager, DAM, and Zettelkasten rolled into one. Many other people would also like this system. Because digital assets come in so many formats. Can Total Commander be used in this way and what would be the best way of organizing this system?
