TOTALCMD64.EXE.MANIFEST question

Post by *KozakMak »

1) TOTALCMD64.EXE.MANIFEST - Enables XP style on PCs where the internal manifest resource is ignored

I can't understand, is it only needed for Windows XP? If I have Windows 10, then it is not used?

2) CGLPT64.SYS - Parallel port driver for Windows XP/Vista/7/8/8.1/10/11 x64.

What is it for? Do we need some old special cable for this?

Is there a wiki page with a detailed explanation of all the files in the distribution? Thx.

External manifests are usually ignored by Windows if an executable has an internal one. IIRC there was a bug in WinXP (no idea which service pack) which caused the system to ignore the internal one. Thus Ghisler added the external one. I don't think this bug exists in newer versions of Windows. In other words, the external manifest is not needed when using Vista or newer. OTOH the bug might return in one way or the other, depending on what Microsoft screws up next...

I'm not sure about the parallel port driver, if that's just for the parallel port or if it's also used for direct USB connections. If you don't use direct connections at all (parallel or USB), this driver won't be used.

To transfer files over a parallel port connection and you need parallel ports on the computers and a special cable. See https://www.ghisler.com/efaqport.htm

Nowadays you would use USB and the right cable. Parallel ports have become generally unavailable. It should theoretically still work though if you have parallel ports and the right cable.

Ok, so TcUsbRun.exe needed only for CGLPT64.SYS ?
Can I safely delete it too?

Yes, it only enables automatically detection when a USB transfer cable ( https://www.ghisler.com/cables/ ) is inserted.

Thx.

I don't understand why this old garbage is in the distribution. For downgrade lovers, it can be made into a separate addon.

I mean, that TcUsbRun.exe can be deleted if KozakMak does not want to use the cable connection.
