Trouble with disk space decreasing on directory changing
HI,
For some time now I have noticed that when you change directories the remaining disk space decreases, for example:
2,283,076,600 Kb -> 2,281,971,664 Kb -> 2,281,617,640 Kb -> 2,281,359,880 Kb -> 2,281,181,016 Kb
Why is this? Is it some type of paging file that grows with use? Because I have a laptop with an SDD of 256 and it's getting dangerously close to 0.
Thank you in advance.

Re: Trouble with disk space decreasing on directory changing
Are you in thumbnail view mode? Then the thumbnails will be saved to the thumbnail cache if they take longer to extract.
They are usually stored in
C:\Users\<your user name>\AppData\Local\GHISLER
There is also a file tcDirFrq.txt in that directory which records how often you visited a certain directory, but it's small.
Otherwise there shouldn't be any disk usage caused by Total Commander itself. Maybe some third party tool in the background, like Microsoft's new "recall" misfeature?

Re: Trouble with disk space decreasing on directory changing
Well, I would search for files that have been recently changed, e.g. within the last 5 minutes or so. This can be done via TC's Find Files, Advanced tab.
If you want a fast search, you could use the Everything tool. But since I don't use that tool, I have no idea how the search term to find such files could/should look like. Pretty sure other users will chime in on this.
PS: Are you sure about the disk size unit being KB? If so, you have 2 TB left on the drive and nothing to worry about. If it's bytes instead, then there are only 2 GB left, and it's a good idea to worry.

Re: Trouble with disk space decreasing on directory changing
Yes, that would be my guess. Check your Windows virtual memory settings if you want to set a maximum or disable it.kaeh wrote: 2024-11-19, 07:27 UTC For some time now I have noticed that when you change directories the remaining disk space decreases, for example:

You should definitely do something about that.kaeh wrote: 2024-11-19, 07:27 UTC Because I have a laptop with an SDD of 256 and it's getting dangerously close to 0.
Re: Trouble with disk space decreasing on directory changing
Try the free toll WizTree.
It allows you to see a detailed view about disk usage,
even the Windows reserved space.
For me, It's definitely the best tool for this job.

In addition to the GUI, I have a button to show usage of the current TC dir.

Re: Trouble with disk space decreasing on directory changing
First of all, I'm not working in thumbnail view, but I'm going to try and tell you if anything worked. Thank you all for your answers.
EDIT:

As you can see there is a lot of disk space not even detected by WizTree (or I don't know how to see it, that could also be :p).
I searched for recent file changes on TC but it doesn't detect any file changed in the last minute.
I don't know what else to do, as you can see, my disk space is running out.

Re: Trouble with disk space decreasing on directory changing
Anyone has a clue on this?
Re: Trouble with disk space decreasing on directory changing
What OS version is this ?
You are running WizTree without Admin rights, or why is there no reserved space on your system ?

Re: Trouble with disk space decreasing on directory changing
Searching for files changed within the last minute might be too limited. However, starting TC as administrator might be necessary to find such files. My assumption is that there's a service or the system itself is writing files, and it's likely that users don't have access to them.

Re: Trouble with disk space decreasing on directory changing
It's Windows 10, but I can't start WizTree with admin privileges on my work computer, and at home it seems to have stopped.
