Add version info to Inireloc tool
2ghisler(Author)
It would be nice if the user can easily identify which version of inireloc they are using. Can you add version info to inireloc? For example, the version number could be added in the first screen after "INI-Tool (Total Commander)" .
And it would be nice if the properties of inireloc.exe also included a version number.

Re: [inireloc 20040916] Filename for wcx_ftp.ini file defaults to wincmd.ini
Honestly I'm not a fan of version info resources. I always forget to change them, so I prefer to not include them at all. The user can just look at the readme coming with the tool.

Unfortunately - the first thing the user does is just open F3 Lister+plug and use that plug which shows information about the file.
Including its version. The same applies to fans of the Explorer. They just open the Properties if they want to understand which version
of the program they are talking about.
Reading something in a Readme regarding a file version is the last thing that comes to mind.

So your convenience outweighs the convenience of the user.ghisler(Author) wrote: 2024-11-25, 09:39 UTC Honestly I'm not a fan of version info resources. I always forget to change them, so I prefer to not include them at all.
The version of the readme file says nothing about the version of the executable file.ghisler(Author) wrote: 2024-11-25, 09:39 UTC The user can just look at the readme coming with the tool.
Re: [inireloc 20040916] Filename for wcx_ftp.ini file defaults to wincmd.ini
I appreciate these decisions by ghisler(author), so that you can see that it is a hand-made tool with peculiarities that are shaped by author. All of this - even version information can be found not only in readme files but also, for example, in the file size and the file date. Especially for TC specialists, this should be a more common option than wanting to have other version information. And yes, this is the real convenience of Tc (as a file manager) for the user. I think you will surely agree with me.white wrote: 2024-11-25, 10:27 UTCSo your convenience outweighs the convenience of the user.ghisler(Author) wrote: 2024-11-25, 09:39 UTC Honestly I'm not a fan of version info resources. Surely I don't agree, otherwise I wouldn't have made the suggestion. The lack of version info is not a charming quirk of a hand-made tool, but rather a user-unfriendly approach that creates unnecessary friction for users trying to understand and manage their software.JOUBE wrote: 2024-11-25, 11:13 UTC I appreciate these decisions by ghisler(author), so that you can see that it is a hand-made tool with peculiarities that are shaped by author. Re: [inireloc 20040916] Filename for wcx_ftp.ini file defaults to wincmd.ini
... is not existent, because there is file date and file size as version information (for all file manager users totaly clear and enough) and, as ghisler(author) says, there is also information in the readme. I am sure that this triple information is enough for those who want to use the tool. This approach also promotes faster and less error-prone development (than if incorrect version information were included). Searching for incorrect help texts and version information is tiring and a mistake if it hinders development.
- Please use the Tc SyncTool for this case for the inireloc tool (overwrite the older one).
- Or use the Tc MultiRenameTool to add versions information according your needs (e. g. [N]_[YMD]-[hms])
Re: [inireloc 20040916] Filename for wcx_ftp.ini file defaults to wincmd.ini
File date is completely irrelevant because it can be changed at any time and even without the user realizing. And what does the file size say about whether or not a file is newer or a newer version? New versions can be smaller, the same size or larger. Thus the file size says nothing at all in this context! File version information exists for a reason.
Furthermore there are various tools helping to automate adding file version information and even increasing file version numbers. I'm saying this while I'm aware that the tools which are part of a TC release or otherwise provided by Ghisler come out of various development environments.

Re: [inireloc 20040916] Filename for wcx_ftp.ini file defaults to wincmd.ini
inireloc is not part of a Tc release and is instead downloaded again whenever required. The OP has also solved the alleged problem himself by specifying [inireloc 20040916] in the subject line.
I'd rather not even talk about "changed ... even without the user realizing".

Perhaps a final note: Of course, what dalai wrote is almost entirely correct (like often). But it is not necessary for inireloc and is not desirable in the interest of spontaneous further development and improvement. And this ability and need to think for yourself is - I think - precisely what makes the Tc so successful *).
*) In this sense, the handling e. g. of the character string ** should not have been implemented, but left to the user to adapt his search resulting from an error input or no knowledge.
Re: [inireloc 20040916] Filename for wcx_ftp.ini file defaults to wincmd.ini
I didn't claim it is. But you should properly quote what I write:JOUBE wrote: 2024-11-25, 13:19 UTCinireloc is not part of a Tc release and is instead downloaded again whenever required.
Dalai wrote: 2024-11-25, 13:02 UTC [...] part of a TC release or otherwise provided by Ghisler [...]
Sure, because it's the only indication about which release this is about. Now try to do the same thing with file size and file date instead ... good luck, I guess.JOUBE wrote: 2024-11-25, 13:19 UTCThe OP has also solved the alleged problem himself by specifying [inireloc 20040916] in the subject line.

Since this isn't really a bug, I'm moving this thread to the suggestions forum.
