Easier rename hotkey?

Post by *Dazzer »

Hi folks,

The shift + F6 hotkey for rename is pretty annyoying (requires two hands on the keyboard and seems random for such commonly used action - and on my keyboard the F numbers are very small so i need to lean forward to see where F6 is each time!).

Is there a way to make an easier, custom hotkey for this action that doesn't reqire a modifier?

Thanks!

In Configuration/Misc you can define your own hotkeys. Set the hotkey of your choice to the command cm_RenameOnly.

Thanks, that works!

Now i'm really being fussy, but is it possible to rename without renaming the file extension?

I mean: when you rename, it selects the whole file name including the extension, but 9 times out of ten you don't actually want to change the extension!

Press hotkey twice, genius!

The implementation of the hot keys is a bit weird though.

My simple brain said to me, ok, let's use R as the rename hotkey. Which works fine, until you want to use an R in the name, at which point it starts the rename process all over again.....doh!

Is there a way to disable hotkeys while typing in a name?

And if that's not possible, then we only have a very limited number of keys available. Is it also possible to use F16 through F19? I'd like to use F19, because it's at the top right hand of my keyboard, so i don't need to search for the correct F number like i do with the F1 thru F12 keys.

Alt+R won't suit you?

I see! I thought a one-handed solution would work too...
Some users use F2 for this command.

Enable the option below:
Configuration - Options - Operation - Select only the file name when renaming (not the extension)

Using letters as hotkeys is impractical not only because of the input fields, but also in the file panels because of the quick search and filtering.

Personally, I don't think pressing two keys instead of one is a problem. For example, I've been using Shift+Z/Y (on QWERTY/QWERTZ) for this frequently used command for a long time, which is easier than pressing F2 or something else. Another convenient option may be Caps Lock, but it can only be assigned using Autorun.

Update your TC to at least 11.03 - this is already implemented!
27.11.23 Fixed: When using a single character for hotkey cm_RenameOnly, don't use that hotkey inside the edit box to select name parts (32/64)

I think the double press with F2 is an elegant solution compared to not being able to change the extension or several key presses to reach it. I was also able to discover it accidentally without reading about it.
