find text in docx file does not work

The behaviour described in the bug report is either by design, or would be far too complex/time-consuming to be changed

find text in docx file does not work

Post by *gregcoaly »

total commander does not find an office file which contains a certain phrase. Is this a bug, a known issue, or am i doing something wrong? Example: I know I have a .docx file which contains the words "high trust" in this particular order. I initiate a search in TC with alt+f7, i put "*.docx *.txt" (without quotations) in field "search for", and "high trust" (without quotations) in "Find text", and the path to the file in "Search in". After this i press button "Start search", but it doesn't find the file.
All of the options are checked on the right, from ANSI.. to Office xml.
For troubleshooting's sake I put a .txt file into the same folder containing these words, and Tc DOES find that, so the function basically works... just not for the docx file.
What gives?
ps. I've been struggling with this for a while now, this isn't this version-specific

It's possible that entire phrases cannot be found due to formatting. I need a test file to find out the reason in your case.

To see what my search function sees, open the docx file with Ctrl+PageDown, then go to subdirectory "word" and view the file document.xml with F3. Now switch to html mode by pressing 5.

You can try finding the string (or parts of it) you wanted to find with the search function. Any anomalies?

Backslashes in the search string could create troubles.

I think that as soon as colleague gregcoaly will post here the file in which he received this error,
everything will become clearer. It remains to wait for this action.

User gregcoaly finally replied to my e-mail a few days ago, and writes that he can no longer reproduce the error. However, now he can't find a specific text in a html file (which he sent me), but it works just fine in my tests. One thing I noticed that the text he was looking for had different case (upper-/lowercase) in the html file he couldn't find, but same case in a text file he could find. So my guess is that he had the option "case sensitive" checked when doing the search. So far he hasn't replied to my new mail where I asked him this.
