Feature request: Visual indication for cut files (Ctrl+X)
Hello,
I would like to suggest a new feature for Total Commander that would improve clarity when working with files. In Windows Explorer, when a file is cut (Ctrl+X) before being pasted elsewhere, it becomes visually semi-transparent, making it clear that it is in a "cut" state.
However, in Total Commander, there is no visual indication for cut files, which can sometimes cause confusion when managing files.
Would it be possible to implement a similar visual effect, such as changing the text color, background color, or icon overlay for cut files? This would make it easier to track which files are currently in the clipboard and awaiting pasting.
Thank you for considering this suggestion!
Best regards,
Milan

I also once thought about it. I think it's possible to add color settings for the dotted border and the object to be cut.

I agree. I will be most satisfied if it is possible to achieve the same semi-transparency of cut files as in Windows Explorer. But of course I will be happy and grateful if any effect can be configured for these files

Re: Feature request: Visual indication for cut files (Ctrl+X)
The more I think about this suggestion, the less I like it:
1. The files aren't actually gone, it could confuse the user that he can't interact with them any longer.
2. Showing the files dimmed this way interferes with how Total Commander shows selected files. I would have to deselect them and either show selected files not dimmed, or disallow selecting them. This is bad when you press Ctrl+X too early and wanted to select one more file. Currently you can just do that and press Ctrl+X again to correct your mistake.
3. Ctrl+X stays active when going to a different directory. TC would have to constantly check the contents of the clipboard to be sure that the selection is still the same when returning to that directory, or to check whether other apps have put files in the clipboard. Monitoring the clipboard is seen as spyware by many people and some virus scanners.

It seems that in Windows Explorer it is a temporary indicator. If you press F5 (Refresh) or change directory, the indicator is assumed no longer needed. However, Explorer does monitor the clipboard (or a change in the clipboard does change the appearance in Explorer). Suppose you press Ctrl+X in Explorer and then switch to another program and also press Ctrl+X or Ctrl+C, then the appearance in the open Explorer window changes immediately.ghisler(Author) wrote: 2025-03-04, 08:09 UTC 3.
