Sharing Button Bars among multiple PC's

Post by *dennis48755 »

Hello,

I tried and really like sharing the Button Bars, wcx_ftp.ini and other common settings between the 4-5 PC's connected to my local network.

Since most of my buttons point to folders in Windows My Documents or one of my NAS and I use the same FTP sites, this works well.

Note, hoping it will deter some malware, I don't map any drives, I use the PC/NAS IP Addresses for the buttons.

This is what I have so far...

Code: Select all

C:\Programs\totalcmd\TOTALCMD64.EXE i="%USERPROFILE%\Dropbox\PC Software\TotalCmd\wincmd.ini" /f="%USERPROFILE%\Dropbox\PC Software\TotalCmd\wcx_ftp.ini"

AlternateUserIni=%USERPROFILE%\Dropbox\PC Software\TotalCmd\AlternateUserIni_%COMPUTERNAME%.ini
PluginBaseDir=%USERPROFILE%\Dropbox\PC Software\TotalCmd\plugins
Buttonbar=%USERPROFILE%\Dropbox\PC Software\TotalCmd\Button Bars\ddmDefault.bar
Also, since I use Dropbox to store personal/sensitive files that I DON'T need to access from the other devices. I would prefer not installing and syncing my complete Dropbox on all the devices.

I'm looking for ideas/suggestions to do this better. And an alternative to Dropbox for accessing the settings files.

Additionally, I would prefer to stay away from OneDrive, I don't even want it installed on my PC's.

Thanks
Dennis

Make sure you use a master password if you store FTP passwords. Otherwise if you share that wcx_ftp.ini with everyone by accident, your FTP passwords would be exposed to the world.

Thanks Christian,

Yes, I do use a master password.

Well, if you'd use a simple local network share, you'd be able to avoid having an internet connection and could drop DropBox (no pun intended) for that at the same time. You don't need to map a share to a network drive to do that.

Hi Dalai,

Could you help me with more info on how to do what you are suggesting. I'm not real network savvy.

Additionally, I do not have the Windows PC & NAS credentials "Remembered", how do I handle the requests to enter the credentials?

Well, since you write you have (and use) a NAS, I'd create a share there and make it writable for your user. I don't own a NAS (and never did), so I suggest to look up how to create a share on your (specific) NAS.
