jonathanpoulin wrote: 2024-12-20, 08:58 UTC Hi,

By the way, I just found out a little bug (my post can be moved after confirmation). In Options -> Operation -> Edit/View -> Configure internal viewer... -> Multimedia, the checkbox "Use Irfanview/Xnview to load graphics other than BMP" seems to be not used. In fact, if the path to Irfanview below the checkbox is valid, Irfanview is used no matter if the checkbox is checked or not. I am pretty sure about it. Mr. Ghisler, can you test it?
Not confirmed.
I have configured a PostScript plugin in IrfanView.
TC or any other of my plugins can't show .ps files
I have configured .ps and .eps as additional files types to show with IrfanView
and it works

and it works
Does it also work when you remove the checkmark at "Use Irfanview/Xnview to load graphics other than BMP" ? - that is what the report is about.

When I uncheck "Use Irfanview/Xnview to load graphics other than BMP" BUT the path to Irfanview is set and valid (and the text box is grayed out), I can see the process i_view64.exe launched by TC in Process Explorer when I browse to a directory with PNG files with the thumbnail view.
Thanks,

Yes, it works as it should be.
When I remove the checkmark, TC displays the source code of the postscript file.
Setting the checkmark lets Lister displaying the graphic result.

When I remove the checkmark, TC displays the source code of the postscript file.
That is what I expected (and see myself), but appparntly not what jonathanpoulin experiences.

I retested and yes, a directory with PNG files displayed with Thumbnail View is using i_view64.exe to load thumbnails, even if that checkbox is not checked. I unchecked it, restarted TC to be sure.

What is your setting for "Configuration" -> "Thumbnails" -> "Use Explorer method (OLE2) for" ? if it does not exclude *.png then this method will be used for generating thumbnails for .png files

Also, if your thumbnails are cached, that can be the reason for .png thumbnails being shown, even if they were extracted by IrfanView.

Or if you have a plugin that extracts thumbnails from .png files, and "Get from Lister plugins for" is enabled will show the thumbnails.

The order of priority of which method that is used to show a thumbnail for a file type, is the same order as the options in the "Loading Thumbnails" group box.

So - if you disable "Get from Lister plugins for" and "Use Explorer method (OLE2) for" - can you then still reproduce your problem?

"Use Irfanview/Xnview to load graphics other than BMP"
This checkbox determines whether Irfanview/Xnview is used in Lister (F3) to load images. You can uncheck it if you don't want to use Irfanview/Xnview in Lister, but still want to use them for thumbnails. There is a separate checkbox for loading thumbnails with Irfanview/Xnview in Configuration - Options - Thumbnails.

There is a separate checkbox for loading thumbnails with Irfanview/Xnview in Configuration - Options - Thumbnails.
But, in order for Thumbnail extraction with Irfanview to work, the Path to Irfanview must still be entered in Lister's Multimedia Configuration, whether or not the box "Use Irfanview/Xnview to load graphics other than BMP" is checked.

The current help for this:
Help wrote:Get from Irfan-/Xnview for:
This method can use an installed (and configured as a filter in Lister) Irfanview or Xnview to load the images.
does not make that quite clear.

Mybe this Help text would be better:
suggestion wrote:Get from Irfan-/Xnview for:

Thanks for the suggestion. I think the text in braces should be changed to
("Use Irfanview/Xnview to load graphics other than BMP" does not need to remain activated in Lister after setting the path)

The saga continues, I have the same issue that *.png thumbnails are not displayed, but after a lot of testing my fix is to run Total Commander in admin mode. So apparently explorer or something blocks TC from generating those thumbs. This happens both for OneDrive folders and also others that have nothing to do with OD. Given this info I don't consider this a config issue it's an elevated privilege issue, possible maybe. Was there any fix for this?

There is nothing to fix.
.PNG files are displayed as thumbnails with normal and enhanced privileges.
Using the entry "Use Explorer method..." for *.*
Is enough for system which have thumbnail providers.
Alternative "Get from Irfan-/XnView" for *.*
provides PNG thumbnails if the path to IrfanView is configured, of course.
