This would free (a lot of) space in the drive bar. And the volume labels are not necessary. If you want to know the name of the drive you simply move the mouse pointer over the drive icon...

What do you mean by "labels"? Is it the volume label in square parenthesis to the left of the free/total space, or is it the drive letter on the buttons?
