Password protected RAR files and headers

Post by *stefanBu »

I want that TC will ask for password when I enter archive
with protedted files and headers too.
(I mean: rar a -hp .....)

Now it only show empty archive and I have no chance to
see what is in.

for example 7z plugin is properly asking for password at
the begining and remember it till I finish TC.

How can I to do it?
PS:Thank you very much. TC is super, rar is compatible for unix,...

Hmm, you should go to a WinRAR Support Forum.

It's still Roshal's product (WinRAR), not Ghisler's.
The best totalcmd.exe!

Remembering the password al the TC session long would be a considerable security risk.

If someone else would have physical access to your PC he would have access to your scrambled archive, too.
And TC will have to save the password somwhere in memory which means it could be read from any program. Thus in my opinion you could use the archiver without any password if it's not aksked every time you would access the protected file.

@Hauner:
stefanBu is talking about the internal rar unpacking, not WinRAR.

@stefanBu:
I support your wish. rar -hp indeed leads to empty archives so TC is not usable with these archives which is bad.

Regarding password remembering I share Sheepdog's opinion, no good idea for security reasons.

The only thing you can do right now is use an external RAR unpacker.

You can still extract such archives via Files - Unpack. Looking inside of them is indeed impossible, though.

It's impossible if you haven't the password, but if TC would ask for the pw, it should be possible to look inside, shouldn't it?

TC would have to parse the output from rar.exe, so it wouldn't work e.g. with winrar.exe (which TC can use for packing now too). I can't add it to my internal functions either because of the Swiss crypto export laws. :(
