Total Commander Code Page Warning and screen reader support

Post by *amans »

Hi, all.
I am totally blind and am trying to use Total Commander 6.5. Unfortunately, I'm finding that my screen reader is reading every file name as ???c? rather than the real file or folder name. I know that the real file or folder name is being displayed on the screen, as I can read it with screen review commands on the reader, but I also know that the reader is not reading the file name correctly in itself. I suspect this is a problem due to the warning displayed by Total Commander below
WARNING!
This directory contains file names from a different code page. Not all
operations are possible (e.g. ZIP, FTP).
If this is your main language, change the options for non-Unicode
programs in Control Panel - Regional Settings - Extended.
Don't show this message in future sessions
OK Cancel

I suspect that, if I eliminate this warning or, rather, if I eliminate the cause for this warning, I can get my screen reader to work with Total Commander. All my files are named in English, and my language in regional and language options, both in the language tab and the setting for non-unicode programs, is set to English United States. What could be causing Total Commander to detect another code page?
Thanks in advance.

Welcome on board.

There must be some names from e.g. russia or from asia - though the used chars could not be displayed with your english codepage. To prevent this you would have to install aditonal codepages for non unicode support - those that are neede to display these filenames.

But as a workaround (since you probably don't know which codepage is misssed) you should use the Total Commander internal command cm_SwitchLongNames to switch to the old 8.3 dos names display. That way you could access all files and folders - even if their long names contain unicode chars that don't fit the current localized settings.
If you need further advice how to create a button with cm_SwitchLongNames don't hesitate to ask again.
