Why buy TC..tell me.

Post by *phew »

Hi people,

I am currently evaluating 'Total Commander 6.51' versus the proposed final 2.5 release of 'Servant Salamander'.

Why is 'TC' the way to go?

Talk me out of buying 'SS'.

– Life time license model, all updates free.
– Outstanding performance
– More features than you can eat hidden in a file size that fits on a floppy
– Four different plugin types extending the functionality to dimensions not possible with other file managers:
  • WCX aka Packer plugins: Any imaginable archive can be entered with Ctrl+PageDown. If it can't be opened in the default setup (zip, rar, ace, etc...) there probably is a plugin.
WLX aka Lister plugins: Any imaginable filetype can be viewed by TC.
WFX aka File System plugins: Uninstalling software, editing the registry, burning CDs, possibilities are endless.
WDX aka Content Plugins: The new interface allows extraction of any imaginable file content, ID3 tags, meta data, video codec, etc... and displays the info as user-defined columns in TC.
– Meanwhile TC has an excellent search because all WDX info can be searched for. So, if you know that you have an MP3 tagged with "tThe Hottest Band On Earth" but unfortunately have renamed it to "ihavenoclue.crap" and forgot where you stored it, TC can find it.
– TC has an excellent Multi Rename Tool that now of course supports Content plugins, too. So, if you want to rename your files by authors name or files date, TC can do it.

Etc...

Last not least:
TC has a fantastic user community and enthusiastic plugin and tool developers sharing their work and time for free in most of the cases. Just compare the user communities, have a look in each forum if SS has one of course. ;)

I manipulate files a lot in my work and really appreciate the following features:

Multi-Rename tool
Ability to split large files, including across a LAN
Directory tabs
Highly configurable, including multiple button bars
Zip packer (encrypted with the AES Encryptor plugin) and unpacker; other formats too
Easy FTP tool

If you gave an idea of what tasks are important to you, we can comment on those rather than give a loooong list of features. I enjoy TC so much that I bought a second copy through my employer for use at work.

I would buy this (i.e. pay the money to the developer(s)) now! If only they made it EASY to do that!

Does a PayPal account exist that I can buy from? (Instead of the long drawn out method that seems to be in place ATM)..If not, why not?

@Christian:
If you want my cash Christian...make it easier for me to part with (via my internet connection)!

You have a very nice niche program here (especially for us old DOSsers with 'NC'/'MC' ideas of how things should be done :) )

I know the NC stands for Norton Commander, but what does MC stand for?
