Error when try to copy Floppy disc from TC

Post by *jctcom »

Hi All. I know there are not many of you still using floppy discs but I still work with some older computers. When I right click on the floppy drive to copy a disc I get the usual copy floppy app. (Copy from A to A). However when I click on "Start Copy" The it says insert the source disc. Then I get the message "Error: Unable to copy disks on this drive" with only the "OK" as an option to click. The same operation works fine from WIndows Explorer.

Running Windows XP Pro and TC 6.61

Let me know if there is something else I should try or if there is more info I can give you to help diagnose this problem.

TTUL.

You must not access drive A:\ with TC. I.e. you have to activate in both panels a drive different from A.\.

But I recommend to install a Virtual Floppy drive.

Thus you can create images, use them into this virtual floppy and make a copy from physical A:\ to virtual B:\ and back whithout disc change. That will be faster and more secure ( I once have mixed up the floppys whlie copiing with only one drive in the old old days of DOS ;) )

And you can also access floppy images from Partitioning tools or Boot discs and alter them without copy them to a physical floppy disc.

Thanks for the info on the virtual floppy drive. It will probably come in handy. However it still does not solve the problem of why the "Copy Disk" option does not work from TC. or gives that error message. And yes I did try it using the virtual drives and same problem.

Strange.

I can reproduce that you can't copy from A:\ to A:\ as long as you access drive A:\ with TC.

But as I wrote already: If I make sure not to access drive A: it works here fine for me from within TC.

To not access drive A: while right clicking on it, you can either go via the Desktop - My Computer, or activate the drive buttonbar and right click on A: there. Reason: XP seems to lock the drive exclusively for copying or formatting, that's why it cannot be open in any program.
