Combine files annoying behavior

I had a set of files that had been split up. Unfortunately, they weren't exactly standard. The names were in the form of:

xxxxxxxx##.yyy

Total Commander (6.50) recognized this and combined them with no problem. However, it named the result:

xxxxxxxx##.out

when

xxxxxxxx.yyy

or

xxxxxxxx.yyy.out

would make far more sense.
