Unfortunately the Windows Tab control doesn't seem to support that, and I have to use this control, otherwise all skining software including Microsoft's WinXP skins wouldn't work with it...

You have two choices
1) Create your own control (take a look at Firefox)
2) Use owner drawing.

To claim XP styles are not supported is not the whole truth. You would have to call the appropriate operations yourself. It's the same problem/solution for all other controls.
