[Off-Topic] USB-Stick protection

Post by *TheGiant »

This might be interesting for other users here, that why I ask would like to discuss this topic:

Does anybody know a good tool to protect files -or even better: directories- on my USB Memory Stick. I carry a lot of personal documents and files on it, and want to protect that, should I ever loose it or if it gets stolen.

Requirements (in order of importance):
1- Program must be able to work from the USB-Stick itself.
NO drivers or other files/registry settings must be used, so that the data can be opened on any PC without installation of a program or leaving tracks behind. So it also works on PC's when I'm logged in with a restricted account (example: Guest instead of Admin) and you can’t install software.
2- Program must be fast and user friendly.
3- Program must be secure enough to stop advanced computer users from breaking in; it does not have to be CIA/Mossad/MI6/FSB-proof. Advanced encryption and compression of data would be nice, as long as it does not slow things down too much.
4- Program should be freeware.

Alternatives
[OK] The simple technique: just pack all important data into password protected archives (ZIP, RAR or AES plugin). Works, but is not very user friendly.
[BAD] My stick came with a password protect program, but it has to be installed on every computer I use it on. Not handy when using many different computers and also computers were you must be admin to install stuff...
[BAD] I tried lots of "folder protection" software from the internet. But most need also to install a driver or DLL's, and they only protected folders on the local computer. Using the Stick on another computer leaves it unprotected.
[BAD] I tried also software that stores data in encrypted files. But they mostly also keep settings in the registry, or are slow, or are are the same amout of work as just using password protected archives.
Unless you know any good program ? :)

Idea.
How about a Plugin, that works as a sort of container for folders that can only be accessed via a password.
A bit like the AES plugin, but then more transparent, maybe in the form of a FS-plugin?

Hmm, what's the advantage to have a folder in network neighborhood instead of a file to open as with the AES plugin?
