In Total Commander, you don't have to "select" a file if you want to perform an operation with it. When the cursor is on a file, you can copy, delete move and do whatever you want with it, without selecting it (by pressing "insert" for example). If the cursor is on a file, it is like the file is selected. "inverted cursor" is only color indeed. You can emulate the way Explorer looks with it.
If you wish to perform an operation with multiple files then you can use the "insert" key or keep SHIFT pressed and move in the list with the arrow keys (like in explorer), or keep CONTROL key pressed and click some files with the mouse.
