[Minor Bugs] LISTER & Help-file + MultiMedia plugin use

Post by *TheGiant »

(1) In the HELP file:
Lister: Options menu:
4. Image
If possible, the file is shown as a bitmap image. Depending on the file extension, the file is loaded as a bitmap with the internal bmp viewer, or with the help of Irfanview.
This text is a outdated as it is now:
- "4. Image/Multimedia"
- and it does not only concern bitmaps images, but ALL LISTER PLUGINS!

(2) In the HELP file:
Dialog box: Configure lister
Multimedia display:
Determines whether pictures should be shown as graphics or text when lister starts.
The option Multimedia lets Lister load and play sound and video files by default. If unchecked, you can still switch to "image" mode to open such files.
What about the option:
"Load Bitmaps as graphics at startup" ?
In TC 6.51, this option activates the plugins first at startup and NOT the "MultiMedia (AVI/WAV)" option.
In fact, I can't discover what this option does ???

the term "Load Bitmaps as graphics at startup" should also be more like "Load Lister plugins at startup"

:) Hello !
This should be posted in the Plugins forum
¤ This concerns the Lister-configuration and the TC-Help, so I think it's on the right place here.
- Just my opinion, I don't moderate this forum…

Load Bitmaps as graphics at startup
is for loading only BMPs internally or other supported file extensions using Irfanview AND lister plugins on startup. There is an internal order, pressing "4" switches:
1. Lister plugins
2. Irfanview/XnView
MultiMedia (AVI/WAV)
is for using internal MCI player on startup, nothing else. You can switch between "MCI" player and lister plugins capable of playing video and sound using "4" as well.

So, I think Giant is right, the options are not too clear meanwhile. ;)

I suggest to rename it like that:

Code: Select all

Load Bitmaps as graphics at startup
=> Start lister in Image/Multimedia mode (for all supported extensions)
MultiMedia (AVI/WAV)
=> Start lister in Image/Multimedia mode (only for extensions supported by MCI player)
Not too easy to find a good string honestly. ;)

:) Hi Jeff !
Not too easy to find a good string honestly.
¤ …and also easily and nicely translatable ! There is no room enough, that dialog is “full as an egg” !
 Might be enlarged a bit, IMHO…

ok, I see that now on my home computer. The computer I was using TC on before probably didn't have any 'MCI player'-stuff installed, so using that switch did absolutely nothing....

Maybe Ghisler can copy&past your explantion about those 2 options to the help file....that would certainly make things better!

and how about these shorter labels:

Code: Select all

Load Bitmaps as graphics at startup
=> Load Image/Multimedia mode at startup

MultiMedia (AVI/WAV)
 =>  MCI Player support only

Talk about outdated. Look at the help file at this:
Associate with...

This menu option opens a dialog box where you can associate data files with programs.

The association allows starting the appropriate editor for a file, simply by double clicking on the file. The association is not restricted to Total Commander, but also works in file manager and program manager.
Would the bold help text be of any help to people who have never used Windows 3?
The text "editor" is ofcourse not right either.

And have a look at this:
Dialog box: Associate

Allows the association of certain file extensions (for example .txt) with programs.

....

New Starts another dialog box to browse for programs (*.exe) to create a new association. If the desired program has any other extension (for example .com), you can type *.com ENTER in the dialog box, which shows the .com
-files in the current directory.
Bold help text is outdated. It should read: "Starts another dialog box to browse for programs (*.exe;*.com;*.bat;*.pif)"
