Hello:
In Windows Explorer I will double click a jpg file and the Windows Picture and Fax Viewer will open and view the photo file. This is what I want. However, when I am in TC and double click on a jpg file, Photo Editor opens the file, which is what I don't want.
How can I get TC to open Windows Picture and Fax Viewer when I double click on jpg files? In TC I did highlight a jpg file, and went to Associate with, it clearly is using the correct information to use ImageView.
Notes: Windows Explorer and TC opens BMP files with Windows Picture and Fax Viewer. Using XP Pro SP2 and the current ver of TC.
Thanks,
AC

File associations in Windows are quite a mess, there are dozens of ways how an association can be made. Apparently you have two different associations for jpg, and Explorer use the one and TC the other one.
Try this:
- set the asociation of .jpg to "none" in Total Commander
- close the dialog
- set the asociation of .jpg to the program you want in Total commander

Big mess!

Good evening,
- Even changing like you say, XP continues to use its own original (crappy) viewer instead to use the association one sets. It's very irritating…

• OMG ! How true it's ! Especially under XP / XP-Pro, I met the same problem and XP users too in another forum.File associations in Windows are quite a mess, there are dozens of ways how an association can be made. …

Absolutely. What about a system which provides windows associations (as far as they can be identified as such) as a template but stores them independent from Windows as an extra file (along with an advanced and working configuration interface)?File associations in Windows are quite a mess, there are dozens of ways how an association can be made.
A bit more ?

Such s list of predefined selections/program associations would be hierarchical.
Imagine you could view all associations listed by program or by simple extension/predefined selection.
Maybe you agree that some Total Commander concepts like predefined selections could be used to create a powerful and well integrated association system.
The independence itself is also important. Many programs steal associations. Such as systems would be immune against those programs.
Of course it should be as easy to de/activate the own association system as the "colors per filetype" function. This could be useful when you don't have a association profile which fits to the current system example when you are on a unknown system.
It would also necessary to provide a function which writes into the opposite direction: From TC to Windows association system.

Imagine you could use an existing "predefined selection" which you could assign to a program (and icon).what about explain it a bit more ?

No it should be a core functionality of Total Commander.Do you mean a kind of plugin / tool for Win, or for TC ?
The only (big) snag…

• Thank you, these explanations are clear !
This is the snag… No means to make a partner-program, in the same painting than nn…View for the pictures ?

- Right! Many times, I resigned to give a try to some interesting program, 'cause it puts the mess in the associations, then a pretty wasted long time is needed to restore the whole caboodle… I dream to "vaccinate" associationsThe independence itself is also important. It's the same with the unified command system.
Is there any reason why it shouldn't be integrated into Total Commander? Do you like the current way associations are handled? If a function in TC is not good it has to be improved. After all a 3rd party application could not do all things an internal function could do.This is the snag… No means to make a partner-program, in the same painting than nn…View for the pictures ?
