the dir command do not work correctly unless you use a correct codepage !
for this you should use

Code: Select all

chcp 1252
Admitted. Did not take into consideration that extended characters will pose a problem.

This together with the fact that a lot of people are much younger than cmd.exe and therefore not too familiar with its usage, I would definitely vote for using the Catalog Maker plugin.
  • Go to the root folder of drive C:.
  • Select any file and any folder.
  • Press Alt+F5.
  • Select as packer "Others" => "Catalog" (or whatever extension you have assigned to the catalog plugin).
  • Select "Configure".
  • On the "View" tab select "Files", "Full filenames", "File Extensions".
  • (Deselect the rest).
  • File types="*.*"
  • Select "OK".
  • Select "Store filenames with path".
  • Select "Recurse subdirectories".
  • Select "OK".
(The selections will be remembered across sessions.)

You will get a plain ANSI file holding all filenames on drive C:.
So no hassle with extended characters (unless they are Unicode).

Good morning, majkinetor.
You can't be serious ?!!?
Yes and no.
No:
I know that there are some people around this forum who know pretty well how to handle cmd.exe. And very few are even older than me (and cmd.exe).
Yes:
For the GUI purists clicking through several steps is easier and more intuitive than typing a command, because you just have to know what you want without having to know a command syntax.
All that just to get file names ?!?!
It just looks complicated, because I did not want to miss 1 single click in my instruction in order not to be told it would not work.
Most people would probably just go through these steps click-click-click without noticing how many steps it actually takes.

The advantage of the Catalog Maker approach is that you get a pure ANSI file (Windows character set) holding all filenames on the disk (and nothing more) as requested by xtrician at the start of this thread.
Wow ! I can't imagine how do you do complicated stuff then !
Such a description would be too long for a forum post. Maybe it could be published inside the WIKI as a couple of downloadable PDF documents.

Good morning Karl.

People are just scared of the things they don't know or understand... cmd.exe is very easy to use and yet, far more powerful then any GUI avaiable. If somebody here wants help, I will try to give him the best solution I know. If he doesn't understand then he can learn. That's why I am here, to learn from others, not to make them do my work. Your approach will make those people come here and ask for every stupid thing imaginable because they don't get any practice with your answer - you did it all.
