Seriously X99, don't be such a negative energy here
Me? :( Me is a negative energy? Me just got some joke wrong...
About jokes: see what happened to some european embassies in some musulmanian countries? just because some caricaturer thought his joke was good.

Maybe back to topic? If you wouldn't mind? Pleeeaaase, let me, let me, let me, let me!
Ooohh, thank you!

This statement wasn't perfectly true. Imagine that you have one "dump" folder and want to backup(=copy) it to some organized structure. So you open it as source and open folder containing that organized structure as destination. In this case you will *need* to use D&D to copy to destination's *subfolders*, not F5.
So my request transforms to another one: maybe let's have a command for changing D&D behaviour?
A command cannot be hidden and doesn't occupy space in options dialog. You will always know what D&D does, no matter how long haven't you been close to your desktop, just because D&D should copy right after you start TC.
So?

I don't insult anyone in a random way or without a reason.
So it depends on others if I insult anyone or not - that doesn't depend on the phase of the moon, etc..

Re: [REQ] Drag&Drop copies by default

XPEHOPE3KA wrote: So my suggestion is to make a new ini setting named like "drag&dropcopy", which should be 1 as default. If it is 0 then D&D should move files, but in conjunction with shift, or by leftdown-move-rightdown-movetodestination-leftup mouse gesture, it should copy.
I subscribe this request.

Hello.Excuse my ignorance i didn't understand much thing about what you guys debate, but i would like to use D&D as it's on windows Explorer.
I"m quite a noob to TC ,i like it but i am not so good in understanding it
The majority of operations i do while using TC is move files across my D drive so simplyfing the method without using the keyboard would be useful for me.
So can anyone point me to a step by step(newbie) method of doing this
Thanks

Hello, alink.

The biggest advantage of Total Commander compared to Windows Explorer is the fact that T.C. does not try to imitate Windows Explorer. In particular it does not imitate the inconsistent drag and drop behaviour implemented by Windows Explorer.

Why is Explorer inconsistent?
If you drag and drop a file / a folder inside the same logical drive, e.g. from somewhere on drive D: to somewhere else on drive D:, Explorer will move the file / folder.
(So the file / folder will be gone in the original location.)
In order to copy, you have to press the Ctrl key and then drag and drop.

If you drag and drop a file / a folder from one logical drive to another logical drive, e.g. from somewhere on drive C: to somewhere on drive D:, Explorer will copy the file / folder.
In order to move, you have to press the Shift key and then drag and drop.

Is this logical or consistent? I do not think so.

Why is Total Commander is consistent?
In order to copy a file / folder inside T.C. by dragging and dropping, you will always use the same procedure: You select the file / folder in the source panel, drag it to the traget panel and drop it there. - No matter whether source and target are on the same disk drive or on different disk drives.

In order to move a file / folder inside T.C. by dragging and dropping, you will always use the same procedure: You select the file / folder in the source panel, keep the shift key pressed, drag it to the traget panel and drop it there. - No matter whether source and target are on the same disk drive or on different disk drives.

I know that you can achieve the same moving result by pressing left and right mouse keys simultaneously. But this is too much finger twisting for my fingers.

What is superior to drag and drop? - <F5> and <F6>
Quite a number of Total Commander users will hardly ever use drag and drop for copying and moving. They will select the files/folders and press
+ <F5> for copying
+ <F6> for moving

If you really wish to make efficient use of Total Commander, then you should definitely rid yourself of the idea that T.C. should be an Explorer clone. Step by step, learn how operations can be executed inside T.C. more efficiently than in Explorer. Learn all the operations which can be done inside T.C. which cannot be done inside Explorer at all.

Kind regards,
Karl

Bottom line boils down to the idiom "To each their own". Whether one prefers drag and drop via Total Commander and or Windows Explorer is up to each individual, more power to them. Simply put, whatever makes your computing with Total Commander easier and more flexible to you then so be it, we should not judge others on *options*, especially since this option can just be ignored for those who would prefer the way things currently are. It appears after reading through many posts that Mr Ghisler has implemented many ideas from others into T.C., In the end, if you do not like it, do not use it but stop casting stones on others because of their ideas, especially when they should not have any affect on you.

Thanks Karlchen,i see your point ,but i use the mouse all the time.I have a little disablity at my left hand,so i am not very excited about using the keyboard. It's nothing major but if it can be done easier i would like to try it.
I use the mouse even on my laptop.I seen the convienence of using the keyboard, hotkeys,TC was recommended to me by one of my friends,he's quite a power PC user, and as opposed to me he almost never uses the mouse.
So any pin point to achieve what i want will be appreciated, especially a solution to quickly switch (toggle)between the two situations.
Thanks

I subscribe. Greater choice enriches the software. E 'boring having to move the hand between the mouse and keyboard.
