Feature Request: Shortcuts Include Original Extenstion
It would nice to have the source file extensions included by default as an option when creating shortcuts.
When creating a shortcut in Total Commander, the original extension is not preserved. So "MyFile.doc" becomes "MyFile.lnk" instead of "MyFile.doc.lnk." Extension preservation can be forced by inserting ".*" in front of ".lnk" in the Create Shortcut dialog box, but this is time-consuming and requires mouse work and typing.
Sometimes two files have the same name with different extensions, and this feature would help immensely. I am always typing ".*" to keep my extensions.

Unfortunately the pattern for the creation of shortcuts is "*.LNK" instead of "*.*.LNK" and it is NOT (yet) configurable.
It is one of the little TC annoyances being criticized since years.
In my opinion there is no real argument against it from the user point of view and the cost of correction seems low.

If you create multiple links, just enter *.*.lnk manually to get the links including the extension.

The initiator of the topic already knows this annoying workaround.ghisler(Author) wrote:If you create multiple links, just enter *.*.lnk manually to get the links including the extension.
Your reply actually points out that the annoyance is even worse when creating a SINGLE link.
Why defending the current behavior? I guess it would not cost more than an hour to get it right.
PS:
A new option in wincmd.ini such as CreateLinkWithOriginalExtension with default value 0 would even serve the holy cow of compatibility.
The meaning of its values would be:
0: No, replace original file/folder name extension by "lnk" (DEFAULT, current behavior).
EXAMPLE:
a.b.c.doc --> a.b.c.lnk
a.b.c.pdf --> a.b.c.lnk (Oops! Name conflict leads to overwrite dialog)
1: Yes, append ".lnk" to original name.
EXAMPLE:
a.b.c.doc --> a.b.c.doc.lnk
a.b.c.pdf --> a.b.c.pdf.lnk
As jb points out, I do know the work-around. And I use it all the time -- sometimes 10 or 50 times a day. And while I can use Windows Explorer to get the results I want as SanskritFritz suggests, the purpose of Total Commander is to avoid having to work with Explorer and act a superior file management program. And TC succeeds, which is why we all love it.
Ghisler, is this a tough addition to make to the program? It's fine to leave the default behavior as it is, but maybe you can give those of us that want it this option.

Well, I could add a switch to wincmd.ini which would make *.*.ext the default pattern for creating shortcuts. Would this help?
