Feature request: Big icons, more lines of text

Post by *Zodarr »

To C. Ghisler:

Hi!

Didn't found anything like this in the forums, so here it comes.

I have some ideas for displaying of files&folders (or anything else displayed in the panes), and maybe for the GUI itself.

First would be variable icon sizes and types. It would be nice to select bigger size for icons (48x48, 64x64, etc.), and to select a PNG, BMP and/or some other type(s) for icons.

The second is, in my opinion the more important one.
If you choose to have 32x32 (or bigger :) ) icons, it would be nice if the filename, ext, size, etc. infos were displayed in several lines (2 or 3 (or more), like in Windows Explorer).
This would require more settings for defining the infos to display (like the different coloumns to choose from, just modified to choose lines).

Example: After the file/folder icon->1st line: filename, extension, 2nd line: description (if exists), 3rd line: file size

Best would be if number of lines, and infos in each line could be configurable too.

I'm curous, if these could be made into the next version of TC.
Anyway, thx for your attention.

In: Options/Font/"Symbol size" is a dropdown menu. There are some standard values: 16x16 and 32x32. Please overwrite this with your wanted iconsize.
Example: 48x48 or 64x64 :).

Kind regards

Oh, thx for the info. I don't know why I haven't tried this, it's so obvious...:)
Ok, I assume, if I build an ICL with e.g. 64x64 icons, that wouldn't be a problem for TC to handle.
With this, half of the icon-misery is solved.

[THOUGHTS]

The other part, namely the icon types, are another question.
I don't think the current ver. of TC can handle PNG icons.
Well, this isn't really a problem, since i could convert PNG-s (or BMP-s, etc.) to ICO, then with some tool build an ICL.
(But, maybe it would be useful TC to handle individual ICO, etc. files)
(Remark: ICO for normal state, and ANI-s for mouseover state of menu and/or file icons? Eyecandy...wouldn't that be nice? Not for usability...)

[END THOUGHTS]

*.ICO everywhere

Post by *Clo »

:) Hello !

• You can use *.ICO files in TC, as well in the lists as in the button-bar(s) !
- You aren't bound to use an ICL.
- About the cursors, the issue has just been touched on…

Hi Zodarr!
I remember StickyNomad posting here a freeware tool:

Xentient Thumbnails
http://xentient.com/products/thumbnails/

This could fit perfectly to your needs.

Please search for "Xentient" in the TC Forum:
TC won't show XentientThumbs
Thumbnails suggestion: each file under the last one

Kind regards

Icons 'n stuff

Post by *Zodarr »

2Clo: Thx, i'll try it. And wait for the enhancement (If there will be any:))

2Stance:
I think u misinterpreted it...
Maybe it's my english (btw i'm hungarian) :)
I'll try to correct this.
U refer to my first post in that i wrote:
...and to select a PNG, BMP and/or some other type(s) for icons.
I meant here not the case, that for an image file, the image's thumbnail would be the image's icon itself.
What i meant is, to choose an icon for a file type or menubar item, that is neither an ICO or ICL, but e.g. PNG or BMP.

Yes, i know, that in Windows you can change the icon associated to a filetype, but if you would reinstall the OS, you could start over with settting up all of it. So, this would be a solution to preserve the settings, as they would be stored in wincmd.ini, or a separate ini/cfg file.

I hope it's understandable now...

Separate INI files?

Post by *Zodarr »

A question just popped in, regarding ini files.
In the current ver of TC, is it possible to separate sections of wincmd.ini, and store it in separate files?
IMHO the wincmd.ini is a bit large now, maybe it would be convenient to have just some basic settings in it, the rest would refer to additional ini files.
E.g. for file coloring setup, FS, packer, lister, content plugins in separate inis, etc.

Is it possible right now? Or if not , would be that a good idea?

I'm interested in this question too. Is it just faster to load one file than to load several files, or is it left for backwards compatibility?

I see i'm not the only one interested in this matter. Good.
And a good question.
If it's for backwards compatibility, maybe it's time to change things:)
I think it would be more easy to edit smaller ini files, rather than searching in a large one for the appropriate section to edit.

BTW: Has TC a script language?

But if you just overwrite icon size to 48x48, TC will just blow up icon size from 32x32, but still use 32x32 size, so icons looks ugly. Example will add soon.

Better in 7---

:) Hello !

• You might try in TC 7.0 RC4, the management of the icons has been improved…

• Moreover, you could post images as PNG rather than JPEG for such screenies, IMHO.
