I've used the WinCommander version as of 4.54 but engaged the following:
I've updated the system in the past and have downloaded the latest TotalCommander 5.51. Installed it as an upgrade, worked like a charm.

Now I'm installing it on a freshly installed PC (Win2k) as a new version, it doesn't regognize my *.key file anymore.

Do I really need to install version 4.54 first and then upgrade or is there a workaround

No need to install an old version first and then upgrade.
Just copy the key-file to TC's programme directory and restart TC.
If this still does not help then check the wincmd.ini file for the variable "KeyPath" and make sure "keypath" points to the directory where the keyfile is.
Note "Keypath" must only hold the complete directory path. Do not add the name of the key-file.
In case you modify wincmd.ini, do not forget to restart TC for changes to take effect.
Oh, by the way, all this can be learnt as well by pressing <F1> inside TC.

Thanks for your quick reply.
I've already checked the F1 option

that was no solution though..

The file was already copied to the correct totalcmd directory, the system has even been restarted in the meantime.
I tried your keypath solution, but there's no keypath entry in the wincmd.ini.
On a friends machine (WinXP) there's also no entry for keypath.

never mind, i reinstalled th4 4.54, registered and updated to 5.51....

there's no keypath entry in the wincmd.ini.

Without the keypath-variable in wincmd.ini, TC looks for the file in its programme directory. This is the default. Therefore on most systems, you will not find "keypath" in wincmd.ini.
If the key file is not stored in the default location, then you need the keypath variable in wincd.ini.
If it is not there, then simply add it to the section [Configuration].
So it looks like this:

[Configuration]
keypath=C:\program files\totalcmd
...lots of other keys ...
(Replace C:\program files\totalcmd by the appropriate path on your system.)

And just for your information: It really is in the online help, if at the bottom of the first page you klick on the link about wincmd.ini and then scroll down a bit. The wincmd.ini keys are explained in alphabetical order.
