- Please, may we know how much time is "for ever"?
- The wanted dir reading is often very long - I noticed that many times- following the line status and the server using rate…
- It could be useful to know the supported commands; just type HELP (>> ENTER) in the command-line of TC; the result'll be written in the TC-logfile, no need to copy the small result-window content.
"for ever" in my case means 15 minutes, after wich I got tired waiting..

argh, the server answers to HELP with a "Command not implemented" !!

Humm moreover sending a LIST command through the TC's command line TC reports to me this message

Code: Select all

LIST
425 Can't build data connection: Data socket not connected.
but I'm still connected to the server

:) Hi again...

• Yep ! You have really a "stone-head" server !
- I saw: "220 ioFTPD [www: http://www.ioftpd.com] - [version: beta 5] "
- Please, could you know what are the features of this "beta", since it's abnormal that HELP be not supported ! Generally, all UNIX servers support HELP...
- It's possible that special definition-strings be used (please, check the Help / Tutorial about this)
"for ever" in my case means 15 minutes, after wich I got tired waiting..
• Well, it's more than enough! I'd to wait for 1... 2 minutes in the worst cases.
... it's a server which doesn't have public or guest logs, so I just sent to you an account detail for testing.
• There is the snag... Like Hacker wrote, the best way to help more is to test an anonymous connection from our own PCs...
- Does your Admin. refuse absolutely such a connection, just to the root with a single test text-file? Even explaining him (?) the useful goal of that handling ?
No more idea at the moment, sorry. Hoping that the Author'll come back here...
  Kind regards,
Claude

Nigurrath,
425 Can't build data connection: Data socket not connected.
To me it seems that this is the problem. You should check if there isn't something blocking the FTP data connection (port 20, http://www.proxybench.com/proxy/articles/stardarddefaultports.asp ), for instance in the config of the FTP server or of a firewall between the server and you.

Lacuna again ?

Post by *Clo »

2Hacker
:)  Hi Roman!
• Do you mean that TC could set the classic Port 21, while Port 20 is configured on that server?
• In that case, it's a TC lacuna, it's worth an improvement, isn't it?
- At least, something like a field in the Connection details dialog, to set a port by hand... ?

• I don't know still why a supposed Passive mode failure isn't returned... Any idea ?
 Kind regards,
Claude

I am saying that I think that there is a control connection (port 21), but no data connection (port 20) and that something is configured to block port 20.
I don't know still why a supposed Passive mode failure isn't returned... Any idea ?
I guess only Christian knows.

...humm

and so why FlashFXP works flawlessy ??

Using TCPview I noticed that

FlashFXP makes a connection between local port 1425 and remote port 1112 (the ftp in on that port)

TC makes a connection between local port 1427 (is PASV) or 1430 (in not PASV) and remote port 1112 (the ftp in on that port)

I asked to our network admins and those ports are completely free, on XP there are no problems too (no local firewalls)..

I'm not a manager of that site. It's a site of "useful things" you know..I started this thread just because it's really strange that TC fails where another program like FlashFXP doesn't.
If you want I can PM conn details to test something..

:)   Hi,

• Absolutely! Such problems could allow to improve TC...
If you want I can PM conn details to test something..
• It should be nice to get a log from elsewhere... only whether that doesn't cause any risk for your job ?
- Thanks if you can do it with safety...

I did not get any connection details. Where did you send them to?

OK, I got the details and connected successfully, I even managed to download a file. I was not using passive mode. Everything went fine.

Log excerpt:

Code: Select all

230 User XYZ logged in.
SYST
215 UNIX Type: L8
FEAT
500 'FEAT': Command not understood
Connect ok!
PWD
257 "/" is current directory.
Get directory
TYPE A
200 Type set to A.
PORT 147,175,102,25,16,238
200 PORT command successful.
LIST
150 Opening ASCII mode data connection for directory listing.
Download
Waiting for server...
226 Transfer complete.
QUIT
221 Thank you for trying out ioFTPD beta5.
Hmm, so the problem must be somewhere between you and the server...

Hurr really really strange!!

Again I would agree with you but another program is working fine from the same PC, so given that there are some firewalling in between me and the server (you know I'm inside an accademic network), it's clear that these blocks give problems to TC only.

Christian could clarify on this? Might be a TC bug or limitation?!?

I tried to call into the discussion also Christian, but it seems he has something else to do (of course) :-D :-D
