Little usability enhancements

Post by *_dpp »

Hi!

As on every major version update i'd thrown away my old configs and configured TC from its "factory" settings.
Major step had been done: only two things left hard to understand: "Define colors by file type" and "Hotkeys".

Drive combobox
When "Show drive combobox" disabled: buttons "\" ".." are shown immidiatly after drive buttons of "Show drive buttons". They should be right aligned. I actualy never use drive combobox itself, but buttons "\" ".." are fast-to-point with mouse when they are right aligned. This will save me about 24 pixels (vertical) of my screen ;)

Find Files
Checkbox & it's edit box: click on disabled edit box (especially: Find Files > Find text) make it enabled and focused, corresponded checkbox made checked, if nothing was written there, unchecked.
"feed to listbox" always available (including search in archives).

Define colors by file type
May be it should be in a one separate dialog (page of options)? If user wants something more then "*.cpp;*pas" masks show him "Find Files" dialog (as Choose command helper dialog)

File comments
I'd never used them, and want a checkbox "Disable file comments functionality". Right now I don't undestend is tc always looking for "descript.ion" in every dir I enter or not. I have "Show icons for special folders" disabled beause it greatly slows the things down on my Athlon64@3200+/1G/Seagate Baracudda 7200@8Mb.
I think such things (+ TestIfSharedDir & copy thumbnails with files) that are executed for every file/folder and can slow TC down should be grouped in one page of options.

Edit controls (especially: in-place rename, in-place path change - sepparator is '\')
Support all functionality of standart windows edit control:
Ctrl+Del - delete word right
Ctrl+Backspace - delete word left
Ctrl+LeftArrow - word left
Ctrl+RightArrow - word right
double click select word
may be _ should be considered as word spliter (optional)

Lister status bar
Long blank spase for plugin status messages, then [line/total lines, column], and may be also [mode (1-7), charset].

Hotkeys
Insted of CAS checkboxes and letter combobox - a special edit box showing pressed combination (much more natural). Show to what command hotkey is associated by default (not just 'default') and to what command it is associated by user.
Choose command -> show hotkey of each command.

Copy method (for experts)
May be some examples should be presented? for eg.:
for 5400rpm/1mb/PIO HDD recomended values are: ...
for 7200rpm/8mb/UDMA4 HDD recomended values are: ...

Little
Quick Search dialog (Alt+letters) should use font of main window.

Start menu: shouldn't there be a little wider space between dialog border and dialog controls?

change attributes > change plugin attributes checkbox should toggle frame with plugin attributes (I dont use Content plugins, not yet).

Help texts: pass through mouse clicks (now: TC window loose focus when tooltip is clicked, then gain it).

Thanks for great work!

Especially the check box in the file find dialog worries me most of the time. Is this checkbox really neccessary?
If I enter some chars in the edit box then I want to search inside files, if I don't enter chars, then I dont want. It would be possible to enable the option checkboxes (case sensitive, etc...) simple by detecting, if some search text is entered.

At least the checkboxes should remember the last state at reopening of the dialog. The text fields are stored, the checkboxes not. This is a little annoying.

I have tried that, but unfortunately I don't get any notification at all when clicking on a disabled edit box. :(

Just click on the checkbox, and the edit box will be enabled AND focused, so you can start typing immediately.

Just make this edit enabled. And maybe(?) gray this (clBtnFace) if not checked.

Check option "Find text" Edit.onChange like you check chechboxes "Limit tab title length to" onChange "charachters"
or like you check in "Internal ZIP compression" radiobutton "other" Edit.onFocus.
