Inconsistent use of "tabs" and "columns"

I suspect the problem of confounding "tab stops" and "columns" on the one hand, and "folder tabs" on the other. See e.g. the configuration dialogue or the tool tip of command 6001: cm_SrcSortByCol1 = "Sort by first tab". The latter may lead to the false impression that it refers to folder tabs.
Therefore, I suggest to abandon the expression "tabs" or "tab stops" and replace it by "columns" when speaking of columns, column headers or column widths. This was already done with "custom columns" (which are not called "custom tabs").
In this way, "tabs" could be reserved for "folder tabs".

"Tab" has become ambiguous.

Hello !
• I agree, such a wording is confusing.
- In French, we have something like "Sorting header", that is not too bad.
- In the English Tutorial we are updating currently (!) I wrote
(Tabstops) Sorting Tabs wich looks clearer I guess…
• However, the kind of button that makes the sorting-header is physically a tab-button, undoubtedly…
- IMHO, “columns” only could be confusing a bit too…
So, what about «Default (sorting) columns"» ?

Hello Clo,
Clo wrote:- I agree, such a wording is confusing.
Actually, I wouldn't have noticed it, but our Spanish friends are presently discussing the translation...

Well, I have a problem with "tabstops". I feel that it dates back to the ancient world of typewriters, and as TC is not a word processor, I think it should be given up in this context. (Now even IE knows about "tabs" and "tabbed browsing" and people will expect a similar use of this expression in TC.)

Are you referring to the shape or to the function? For me they are column headers (although I'm not sure if this is correct English).

Yes, something like that. Although I would leave out "sorting" because this applies to custom headers as well.
Options: - Default columns
Tooltip: - Sort by first column header (?)
I admit this doesn't sound very convincing...

I meant
the shape of these buttons, of course !
- I'm bound to keep (
Tabstops) with “Sorting Tabs” because the English strings are hard coded and used on the dialogues, quoted in the Help and I can't change them…
- Indeed, English speakers can try to use the external LNG, even use it always has been proposed ( not really successfully till now…) but in a transitional period, one ought sit on the fence (In French : We ought deal carefully with the goat and the cabbage …)
- Anyway, this poses an issue for the translators - among a bunch of other irritating words - but I'm sure that you'll find the right wording in Spanish and "Catala"

Hello Clo,
Thanks for explaining the difficulties involved.
but I'm sure that you'll find the right wording in Spanish and "Catala"

Oh, this is where I rather prefer to "sit on the fence".
