PDF - acrord32 stays in memory

Post by *tosbsas »

Hey

dunno what I am doing wrong, but when opening pdf files with f3 or with universal viewer I can see everything - but when closing the file two apps stay in memory

acrord32.exe
acrod32info.exe

How can I tell the viewers to close those too??

Ah, don't you hate it when nobody bothers to answer?
  • What version of Windows and Acrobat Reader are you using?
  • Running Acrobat Reader from a shortcut and opening a PDF-file from within the reader, do the mentioned processes stay in memory after closing the application as well?
  • Have you already checked through the Reader options menu?
  • Do you have an Antivirus application (KAV/KIS) running at the same time?

Ok, since i'm using the same version of the Adobe Reader i checked through the whole lengthy endless options dialog again, but couldn't find anything that might by of any help here.

Since you answered my second question negatively it doesn't seem to be an issue of the Reader itself but the processes/files used to call the Reader from within TC or Universal Viewer. Does the problem persist when you close your Antivirus application? I whitnessed similar issues with non-closing processes caused by an AV product myself once, not so long ago.

Say, you have configured to open PDF-files with F3 in the [Extensions]-Section? I just tried that (i use standard ALT+F3 for extensions), worked without issues here. Though for me only the process <acrord32.exe> gets loaded. Please check once more when opening the Reader via shortcut if the <acrod32info.exe> appears immediatelly as well, or if it appears right after opening an PDF. Maybe the problem is related to <acrod32info.exe>.

Ok, we are getting somewhere (:-))

1. When opening with f3 I get both apps running, but info disappears after a while

2. When opening with shortcut now info is opened till I open a file - then I get the info.exe too.

When closing that, first the acrord32 disappears inmediatly and after a while the info exe too

So ....

Is that with AnitVirus turned off or do the processes disappear always but it just takes a while? If the later, i guess your problem is solved, as its just takes some time for the processes to close properly on your system, depending on RAM, CPU, other processes taking up CPU cycles, Harddisk defragmentation.

Also, you might want to try a new version of Adobe Reader v8.0 which was released just recently. Its said to have improved loading times and a cleaned up Options dialog.

You got me wrong -clean up works only when using shortcut, when using f3 the acrord32 stays indefinitly - have to kill it with taskmanager

Ruben

By the way - to get only Version 8 on my system do I have to uninstall Version 7 first or does it install on top??

You should uninstall the old version first, because usually Adobe Reader v7.0x installs in <drive:>\Program Files\Adobe\Acrobat 7.0\, so you would end up with two installs, with the older beeing left unused after.

Also by first uninstalling the old version and then installing the new one you might get your issues fixed as there are countless possibilities of Registry entries which could be currently screwed and thus be the root of your problem. After uninstallation i recommend to do a reboot prior to new installation since many uninstall routines rely on a reboot to completely finish (e.g. remove uninstall leftovers).

Make sure there are no remains of Adobe Reader v7.08:
  • in folder "\Program Files\Adobe"
  • in folder "\Program Files\Common Files\Adobe"
  • in folder "\Documents and Settings\%username%\Applicationdata\Adobe"
  • in Registry key "\HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Adobe"
  • in Registry key "\HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Software\Adobe"
This is not a complete list of where to find files from Adobe Reader, but that should cover the locations that could influence the behaviour/success of of a new flawlessly working installation.
