[Suggestion] Search selected text in Lister

Post by *szlori »

I've searched the forum for this but couldn't find, although I'm pretty sure this must have come up before...
So here is my small request.

I would like to search for another appearance of a string in Lister.
If one appearance of this string is right in front of me, now I have to:
  • copy the string
  • open search dialog
  • paste the string
It would be much easier to have a check-box on the search dialog:
"Search selected"
If checked, this would automatically copy the selected string in the search field.
Many editors or viewer have this handy feature.

Cheers!

In TextPad the selected text is automatically suggested when pressing Ctrl-F.
With F3 the selected text is even searched for without asking (mark text, press F3, and you're at the next occurance).

OK, Lister is not an editor. But the feature is very handy, if you're used to it.

I don't use text viewers except Lister. Text editors that do so: MS Word, EmEditor.

I support the request too, but not with F3! F3 is used for searching fixed text, and it would be very inconvenient if this search session resets each time I select some text. I would suggest Ctrl+F3 instead, it is more common among text editors for searching selected text.

Correct, F3 usually means "continue searching" and in most text editors I am using, this only equals "find marked text" if no other search has been started before, otherwise the previous search text is used.

What editors are using Ctrl+F3 instead of Ctrl+F for that?

Not in Textpad (which I use):

Most of what I used, but I can't name them now, as I don't remember exactly how behaves each of them. At least, this is the behaviour of EmEditor, Compare It! and integrated editor of MS Visual Studio.

PS: I mean not opening the Find dialog with selected text inside (this is, indeed, Ctrl+F), but immediate searching of the next occurence of the selected text.
