Layout of “Connect to ftp server” dialog

Post by *now »

I’ve done a mockup of the “Connect to ftp server” dialog.
  • Capitalized the title
Changed the label “Connect to” to “Server”
    Capitalized the labels of buttons
Added a mnemonic for the “Duplicate entry” button
Removed the maximize button and replaced it with a help button
Removed the “Help” button, as there’s now a help button in the title bar
Made padding around elements uniform (5 pixels)
Added visual splitters between different button groups
I wonder if people ever need to maximize (or even resize) this dialog, so that’s the rationale for removing the maximize button and replacing it with a help button. Doing this also frees us from having a button that is rarely used (“Help”).[/url]

1) the help button inside the caption bar is no replacement for <F1> help. It's normally used as drag&drop help (similar to context sensitive <SHIFT+F1> help)

2) I may be wrong, but minimize and maximize buttons are drawn by window if the window style is set to resizable.

3) Don't remove the resize ability!
It's extreme useful, if for example the screen resolution is increased above the normal 96? dpi (helpful on 16" notebooks with 1920x1200 pixel TFT). In this case the button are enlarged too, and maybe not visible in a fixed size dialog.
Or perhaps if you have a very long list, and don't want to see a scrollbar..

Kind regards,
Holger

This is how it is sometimes used, yes. But in, for example, Microsoft Word, it simply opens the related help topic in its .chm.

Configurable, but the question is if it should be sizable…

OK, just a suggestion, like all proposed changes.

Add/Delete Folders in FTP Dialog Box

Post by *deloff »

I have 140 FTP entries in my "Connect to ftp server" dialog box. Scrolling to get to the ones I need can be a pain. It would be nice to be able to create folders to drop connections into. Currently I just prefix the names of the entry as needed with my clients name to keep them all together. But folders would definitely shorten the list. Making them as expand/collapse branches would be perfect! Thanks.

Bars ?

Post by *Clo »

:) Hello ! Welcome aboard !

• As a workaround, you could set one or several button-bar(s) for the most often used ones, with the command :
FTPOPEN Session_Name.
- You could too - in the case of several bars- affect each bar to a group of connections, according to your needs.
- For instance, sorted by alphabetic order (with an appropriate icon to call each group : A >> E - F >> K and so on…)
or any other convenient sorting…
- Using five bars, you can set 30 connections per bar and have the icons to make the circular call, with 24² icons.

 Kind regards,
Claude

Thanks Claude, I had actually attempted just what you described. But my FTP entries are quite descriptive and you can't display that very well on a button bar button without having to hover over each one to see what the tooltip says. I've also gotten accustomed to hitting Ctrl-F to open the FTP dialog box and just discovered I can type the first letter to jump to where I need. So, I 'll see how that works out. Thanks again.
