Try unpacking the file with Alt+F9 (unpack specific files) while the TAR file is closed instead of opening the file with Enter, this takes much less memory and should also be faster.

Does that only apply to TAR files or is it also valid for ZIP files for example?this takes much less memory and should also be faster.

It's true for all archive types which are unpacked internally and externally, because the file contents aren't loaded into the file list.
